She shakes her head. “How do you do that?”

“Do what?”

“Always be so confident in your skin?”

“I’m not. I fake it a lot of times until I feel it.” Flicking my gaze to hers, I warn, “And if you ever tell anyone, I’ll gut you.”

I’m not going to get any more homework done, so I scribble one last note, then close my books. “Now, would you like to go do something with me?”

She jumps off the bed. “Sure. I’ll meet you back here after I get changed.”

I shake my head and say, “You don’t need to change. What you’re wearing is perfect.”

She takes in her outfit and quirks a brow at me. “It’s just jeans and a tank.”

“Yup. Like I said, it’s perfect for where we’re going.”

Chapter52

Holden

Idon’t make a habit of keeping tabs on my friends, but the proximity sensor for the secret passage in the hallway went off hours ago. I checked the camera feeds and saw Finn running through the underground tunnel towards the garage.

He was in a hurry, but clearly not in any danger. Now I’m waiting for him to get back to find out what’s going on.

The knock on my door signals his return. I open it to let him in, and go to grab a bottle of water from the fridge. “You want something to drink?”

“Yeah, a drink will be good.”

I grab a second water for him. It’s late. Too late to give him a beer, especially when I don’t know if he’s already been drinking. I hand him the water and sit in my bean bag chair. “You set off the proximity sensor when you took off today.”

“My bad, dude. I was in a hurry.”

“I could see that. Where was the emergency?”

“Thea was heading out, so I went, too.”

Finn and I took on the bulk of shadowing Thea. Neither of us were all that upset that Pax found reasons to get out of his turn. He and Thea are like oil and water. Whenever they get anywhere near each other, they’re at each other’s throats.

My guess is Pax wouldn’t be able to keep his distance and just watch her the way Finn and I can. He’s too in your face with everything. Their altercation would probably end in bloodshed.

“Did she meet up with Kincaid again?” I try not to sound too interested in the answer. None of us likes that guy, so of course he’s the one who’s spending time with her.

Finn shakes his head. “She and her friend, that LJ girl, were hanging out in some rundown strip mall out by the crater.”

“Doing what? Driving through a ghost town and taking selfies?”

“Watching a fight.”

“Who was in a fight, and why didn’t we know anything about it?” We’ve got our finger on the pulse of everything that happens on campus, so a dispute we knew nothing about is troubling.

My ears ring as I filter this information into my already overloaded brain. I feel like there are too many things happening at once.

Our pledge schedules, prospect challenges and this thing with Thea. Not to mention trying to figure out if she’s funneling information to Austin now that she’s no longer pledging Zeta Nu.

I’m glad Finn was tailing her tonight. I had a lot of studying to do and my focus would’ve been on my assignments instead of paying attention to what she was doing. “So, the fight?” I prompt, forcing my brain to focus on one thing.

“Oh, yeah. It wasn’t a dispute, it was a brutal display of athleticism and endurance.”
