“So,” He shoves his hands in his pockets and stares down at his feet a bit before his brown eyes lift up and meet mine. “What would it take for to you consider going out with me tomorrow night?”

“You don’t waste anytime do you?” I laugh at my own joke, but inside I’m dying.

“Not when I see something I want.” His brown eyes glisten, but they are nothing like the blue ocean I’m used to staring into.

At that moment the breeze picks up and the familiar smell of cedar wood hits me. My eyes flicker to the parking lot a few times, but come up empty. It doesn’t stop the uneasiness swirling in the pit of my stomach. I can’t help but feel like I’m being watched, but that’s stupid. No one knows where I am. Hell, no one even knows who I really am.

“Everything okay, Lorelei?” Alan asks, bringing me back to the present.

“Yup. Totally fine.” I snap my attention back to him and let my own stupidity fade away.

“About tomorrow night?” He tilts his head to the side and waits out my answer.

My eyes do a head to toe inspection of him. Everything about him screams safe. His smile seems so clean cut. So cookie cutter. So the opposite of a dark haired demon that broke my heart. And maybe that’s what I need?

“Sure. I’d love to go out with you tomorrow night.”

“Awesome.” His lips spread into a wide smile showing off his over-bleached teeth, as he leans in and brushes away a stray strand of hair from my cheek.

I force out a smile, ignoring the knot forming in the pit of my stomach, and toss back more of my beer in a silent toast. Things are only going to change if I take the initiative and that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Come tomorrow, Lorelei Kahlo will be one step closer to melting into what’s left of Kelsey Loren.
