His hand tightens against my hip, but he speaks to Charlee and ignores me. “I think that’s a great idea, Hellcat.”
My spine stiffens as my head whips in his direction. “Ax?” I press. He should know that an evasive answer isn’t going to cut it. Not by a long shot.
A muscle in Axel’s jaw jerks as he swallows. My throat goes dry watching the way the muscles in his throat flex with each movement. It’s sexy. Everything the bastard does is. “Just out.”
“Out where?” A vein throbs in the side of my neck. If he thinks his vague answers will appease me he’s dead wrong. I will find out what he’s hiding. Out of the corner of my eye I catch Zane hand Lily back to Charlee and then he and Asher leave out the front door to avoid being caught in the line of fire. They’re definitely much smarter than their brother.
“I told you, I’m going to find those fuckers that shot at you.” He shoves a spoonful of grits into his mouth as his eyes stay planted on mine.
“What does that mean exactly?” I ask, as he shoves his plate of food in front of me. Damn him! He knows I can’t resist a fresh plate of southern grits.
“Exactly what you think it means.” He kisses me on the top of the head and walks out of the house without another word, whistling.
I’m left sitting there with my mouth open. What the hell just happened? I turn my attention back to Charlee and she shrugs like it’s no big deal as Lily gnaws on her tiny fist.
“It’ll be fine. You need to trust them. They know what they’re doing.”
There in lies the problem, though, doesn’t it. Because I don’t. I don’t trust Axel as far as I can throw him.
