Page 18 of Redemption

Asher places Lily against his chest with hand cupped around her little body and another cradling her head. Zane and I watch with blank faces while he settles her in place. He’s so lost in his daughter that he forgets we’re even standing there. Seconds tick by before he manages to pry his eyes off of her long enough to realize all eyes are on him.

“What?”

“Motherhood suits you.” I cock an eyebrow at him.

His eyes narrow and I’m sure if Lily wasn’t in his arms I’d be sporting a black eye or two right now. He opens his mouth to probably ream my ass when he catches sight of Zane’s truck is. The corner of his mouth curls into a tight smile. “Where’s Willie Mae?”

It takes only a second for his words to register. I whip my head to the side as my hands ball into fists. “You ratted me out like a little bitch, Z?”

“You weren’t answering your phone.” Zane shrugs and runs his fingers through his beard with a cigarette pinched between his fingers. I hope that shit catches fire. It’ll serve him right. Neither one of them will ever understand a relationship between a man and his truck.

Asher presses a kiss to the top of Lily’s head, but never takes his eyes off mine. If he wasn’t holding my wildflower I’d punch him in his smirking face.

“Fuck all y’all!” I storm into the house after the women. With all the bullshit that happened after that explosion I haven’t had time to dwell on the enormity of my loss. Now that Asher’s shoved it back in my face it’s like sticking a knife in old wounds; I’ll find the fuckers responsible and they’ll pay for what they did—to both my girls.
