I might not be in the best of moods now, but I’m determined not to allow Snoot to totally ruin what was a really great day prior to his totally sucky intervention.
And anyway, Daddy will hopefully come and call for me later – and I just know that he’ll be able to set everything right again.
Chapter 10
Jason
Damn, that was a hard day’s work all told.
But you won’t hear me complaining about hard work – hell no!
After dropping the guys back off at their houses, I made my way home and hopped into the shower. Just a quick wash to get the day’s grime and dirt off my body and then I was making a protein shake to replace all those calories I’d burned off during the day.
And now?
Well, I’m standing outside my baby boy’s house with a big box of chocolates and a bottle of his favorite white wine.
I’m more of a beer guy myself, so I hope it’s cool that along with the wine I’m also fully loaded with a six pack of some especially crisp European lager.
Something tells me that Nick won’t mind what I’m carrying – as long as what I’m packing inside my jeans is good to go!
‘Hello?’ I say, suddenly noticing that the front door is off the latch. ‘Boy? Are you in?’
I don’t have to wait long for an answer either.
Before I know what’s hit me, I see the sight of my beautiful baby running toward me and wrapping his soft hands around my tightly fitted grey t-shirt.
‘Hey, someone’s pleased to see his Daddy?’ I say, noticing just how tightly Nick is squeezing me. ‘Everything good with you, my baby boy?’
I can tell that something’s not right.
It’s one thing a boy being happy to see his Daddy, but the fact that he’s not letting go of me is telling me something else altogether.
‘I don’t want to say,’ Nick says, his voice sounding like he’s close to tears.
‘Huh. Okay. Well, let’s just take a seat,’ I reply, determined to get to the bottom of this ASAP. ‘Now you tell Daddy what’s worrying you. That’s an order.’
‘O-O-O-Okay, Daddy,’ Nick replies, his voice still quivering as he begins to explain. ‘It’s Snoot. He’s been saying mean things… aboutyou.’
‘Grrrrr,’ I reply. ‘That asshole was riding me all morning. Yeah, we exchanged a few words that weren’t exactly friendly. Don’t worry about it.’
I make a mental note to put Snoot very much in his place the next time he dares to show his face around me.
But I can see that Nick is still worried.
I need to knowexactlywhat Snoot said about me.
‘Tell me more,’ I say, gritting my teeth ready to listen to whatever that stuck up douchebag has been saying. ‘I need to know.’
‘He said you were a bad builder. A conman,’ Nick says, burying his face into my chest. ‘He said you were going to run away with my money!’
‘Okay, baby boy,’ I reply. ‘You know that’s all total bullshit, right? You’re my boy, I would never do anything to hurt you.’
‘I know, Daddy,’ Nick says. ‘It just gave me a shock to hear someone being so mean to me like that. It brought back some bad memories.’
This is outrageous.
Why would Snoot say something like that? It doesn’t make sense. Sure, he was mad at me after our little altercation – but to come out with something so specific just doesn’t make sense.
