“Yeah, it worked out pretty well for my plan.” When we’re far enough away from the parking lot, I lay out the blanket and invite Sarah to join me. Lying on our backs, we look up at the night sky. At first, the stars aren’t all that clear. I turn my head toward Sarah. “It’ll take about twenty minutes for our eyes to adjust from the light of the RV to the darkness, so we can see the stars clearly.”
She turns her head toward me with a smile. “Whatever shall we do to fill the time?” she asks all innocent-like. We’re the only ones out here tonight, so I roll on top of her.
CHAPTER36
–sarah–
When AJ rollson top of me I can’t contain my giggle, until he drops his lips to mine. That shuts me up quickly. I adore the way he kisses me. I sigh as he places a soft kiss on my bottom lip, then traces his tongue along the seam where my lips meet. “You’re so beautiful, Sarah. And I’m not just talking about how you look. You have a beautiful heart,” he murmurs against my lips, sending my heart somersaulting.
My hands grip his sides as I press up to capture his lips. He opens and slides his tongue into my mouth without hesitation. As our tongues dance with each other, I slide my hands along the hard planes of AJ’s back, feeling the play of his muscles as he holds his body weight off me. I press down, encouraging him to close the distance between us. I want to feel him on top of me, be trapped beneath his strong, hard body. He takes the hint and drops so his chest is pressing against mine, his pelvis cradled between my thighs. I wrap my legs around him, locking him to me, and push up against his steely shaft trapped behind his zipper. He grinds down and it’s amazing, sending sparks flying through my body. Gliding my hands to his shoulders, I trace his muscles down his arms and back again, finally sliding my fingers through the short strands of hair at his nape.
My heart pounds in a fast rhythm, as our kiss continues, deepening, becoming more intense. He’s making love to my mouth under the full moon in the middle of the sand dunes and I want this moment to last forever. I want to burn it into my memory banks and remember it when I’m old and gray. With confident movements, AJ removes every stitch of clothing from my body and his and makes love to me beneath the starry night sky.
With glistening skin, we lay on the blanket catching our breath, wrapped in each other’s embrace. I gasp when my eyes land on the night sky and the billions of stars twinkling above us. “This is gorgeous, AJ.” I turn my head to look at him. “Thank you for bringing me here.”
He presses a kiss on my lips. “You’re welcome, Cupcake. Happy birthday.” I shiver. “Are you cold?”
“A little.”
“Let’s get dressed, then.” We both quickly dress, curling back around each other to enjoy the starry night for a while longer. As our eyes grow heavy, we decide to make our way back to the RV in the dark. “I thought we could sleep here tonight.” AJ presses a button and the roof shade slides back, exposing the night sky through a moon roof. The perfect name since we now have a spectacular view of the night sky while laying on our soft bed.
“Oh my God, this is amazing!”
AJ locks the door and climbs into bed beside me, he places his hands beneath his head, and a proud smile fills his face. “I’m glad you like it.”
“Likeit? I freaking love it. It’s incredible.” I snuggle into his side, and he wraps his arm around me, tugging me in tight to his body where I know I’ll always be safe.

I wake to the early rays of dawn streaming down on me, wrapped in AJ’s big spoon. I press back into him, enjoying his warmth and he kisses the back of my head. “Morning.” His voice is gruff from sleep, and my body immediately responds. “I should have closed the roof last night,” he grumbles.
I turn over within his embrace. “I’m glad you didn’t. I want to watch the sunrise with you.”
His lips tip up and he kisses the end of my nose. “We could make that a thing you know. Watching the sunrise together. We’re both early risers.”
“I like the sound of that,” I whisper. AJ’s fingers glide lazily up and down my spine, following the curve from the base of my neck to the top of my ass as the cabin fills with golden light to start a brand-new day. We lay in silence, my mind quiet while I soak up this moment, both of us happy to absorb each other and our uninterrupted time together. “We should get up and watch the sun touch the dunes.”
AJ taps his fingers on my hip and climbs out of bed, helping me up. I throw on one of his T-shirts, and he pulls on a pair of gray sweats, leaving his magnificent torso bare. My breath gushes out of me as my feet touch the cold gravel, and my eyes land on the golden dunes. AJ’s arms wrap around me from behind and he walks me forward, his breath warm against my neck. He rests his chin on my shoulder, and I bring my hands up to cover his, tucked beneath my breasts.
My gaze skates across the dunes, appreciating their beauty, so different from yesterday. “How is it that the same landscape can look so different in a new light? This has to be one of my most memorable moments,” I breathe.
Cataloging the changes to the landscape, I have a sudden epiphany. I think Mel was right. Michael and I had to fall apart to make room for AJ to come into my life. When I think back to the years I spent mourning the loss of that relationship, I wish I could go back and change my perspective now I can see things in a new light.
I feel AJ nodding. “Definitely. I know I’ll never forget it.”
Once the sun rises, we get dressed and eat breakfast, then AJ proceeds to spoil me with adventure after adventure. I can’t believe he planned all of this for me. When we weren’t doing the touristy thing, AJ was inside me, blowing my mind and loving on my body. The memories we’ve created during this trip will stay with me forever and I let a future with AJ wash over me. Trips together, exploring, growing together, and raising a family …together.

As I place Eric’s morning pot of tea on his desk, he smiles at me. His demeanor has been more relaxed the last couple of weeks. He tips his chin toward the seat opposite his desk. “Please sit, we need to discuss a few things.”
“Do I need my tablet to take notes?”
“No, you’ll be fine.” I take a seat, ready to listen. It’s been great to have the old Eric back, the office is back to its usual relaxed atmosphere. Eric straightens and folds his hands one on top of the other on his desk. A smile forms and his eyes glisten. “My grandson will be coming in next Monday.”
My heart skips a beat. I know this is what Eric wants, what he needs, but I can’t help the selfish side of me that doesn’t like change. I squeeze my hands together to stop myself from fidgeting. “That’s wonderful, Mr. Wainwright. I can’t wait to meet him.” Hopefully, my smile looks genuine and I make a mental note to prepare a special batch of cupcakes in an attempt to impress my new boss.
“Yes, it’s been a long time coming. He’s moving from New Jersey as we speak, and I couldn’t be happier to have my grandson home.” He blinks his eyes rapidly and moves his gaze over my shoulder. I barely resist turning around to see what’s caught his attention.
