I tilted my head to the side. “What would make you think that?” Dimitri moved so that we were chest to chest, his breath was hot near my face.
“You’ve had an angelic onlooker since the moment we started talking. I’ll assume that’s the new man that’s satisfying you.” I said nothing, not giving him the satisfaction. He drew his eyes over my shoulder again, indicating that he knew about Nicholas and how volatile he must be by now. “I don’t think he likes this little position you’ve put yourself in.”
I sighed. “No, he probably doesn’t. But he doesn’t own me.”
“He really doesn’t like this at all. Angelic possessiveness is a heady scent isn’t it.” Dimitri, always the instigator, ran a hand through my hair. “Since you aren’t claiming one another then he shouldn’t mind if you kissed me.”
My face screwed up in confusion. “Kissed you?”
Dimitri looked at me as if he was totally serious about his statement. It wasn’t surprising coming from him. I would have let that flirtatious forwardness wash over me and thrilled at it. A lot had happened between the last time I kissed him and right now. A certain person had happened. His lips looked plush and soft. I knew they tasted like sin and every single desirable thing you could dream up, but I wanted different lips that tasted equally like sin, but the kind of sin that felt like heaven.
“Nice try, but I’m not kissing you. It’s not part of the plan.”
Dimitri snickered. “You came over to me, glowing from the dance floorwith your angel to ask me questions and you won’t even kiss me in return.” He lifted his hands up and fell back onto the couch. “I admire you, Soul Seether. It’s truly a wonder how you can charm me but still be so far away with another man on your mind, let alone an angel. A lesser man would be insulted.”
I nodded over to the women and some men that were huddled hoping to speak to him, or suck his dick, either was a high possibility. “I think you’ll survive.”
He looked over at where my eyes went, and he laughed. “They will do, I suppose. You come to me though, if your angel isn’t enough, which I’m betting he isn’t.” I nearly looked behind me and whimpered with the thought of him almost fingering me on that dance floor. Oh, he was enough, and he thoughtIwas enough. I pushed off his lap, not saying another word as I wiped my hands down my dress and pushed my hair over both my shoulders. I turned to walk away, but he halted me, grabbing my forearm.
“I’ll be speaking with Lilith in about a day or so before the club opens. I don’t know what she wants, but she is meeting me here. I can help you by letting you in on what she says to me, if you come by the club again,” he offered, expectantly. I looked into his eyes for some kind of mischief, some kind of secret agenda. I didn’t find anything.
“Fine, day after tomorrow. I’ll be back and you’ll tell me everything. And don’t expect me to kiss you or sit on your lap for the information.” I tipped one corner of my mouth upward.
He placed a hand over his heart. Or whatever he had beating in his chest. “You have my word. I can’t promise that you won’t want to, though.” He winked at me before giving his attention to the demons nearly clenching their thighs together just looking at him. The handsome bastard was popular, and demons around here would think I was crazy for not just begging him to kiss me, but I didn’t want his kiss. Not anymore.
Present
Before we’d left the club, he didn’t really look at me. It was like everything that had transpired on that dance floor had disappeared and now the air was frosty between us. I had to pull Elise away from a pretty dark-skinned girl I’d found her with in a corner of the club and Nick had to take the drink out of his best friend's hand before we left. I tried to tell him we could talk later at the hostel, so that I could explain whathappened, but he didn’t seem interested. He was almost vibrating with the kind of intensity I’d never seen from him. I had tried to grab his arm, but he yanked it out of my grip. A muffled,I’m fine, leaving his lips before he moved away.
The walk back to the hostel was quiet and awkward and I hated it. Elise opened the door for us, and we tried not to be super loud, but that didn’t seem to matter when drunk demons were scattered on the couches. I could see a few huddled over the counter in the kitchen, devouring a meal. Beetee was nowhere in sight and after tonight, I don’t think I wanted her to be a part of whatever was going to happen here. Elise raised her arms above her head and yawned, “he isn’t happy with you. I think he’s pouting.”
I narrowed my eyes, knowing exactly what she meant. The boys were behind us, and he was looking at me as if he wanted to say something, but he couldn’t even fathom speaking two words to me. I knew what happened in the club wasn’t something nice to see, but my reasoning was my own and I hadn’t given into Dimitri’s advances like he probably assumed I did.
“I’m not pouting.” His deep voice rang out as he pushed past Reese to close the distance between us.
“Are you sure about that?” Elise pushed.
“It looks like that’s exactly what you’re doing.” I added.
Nick turned his head to me and ran a hand through his hair. “It’s not pouting. This is just what it looks like when you aren’t told the whole story until it’s thrown in your face literally two feet away from you.”
“Ugh, I tried to fucking talk to you about it afterwards, but you were too busy ignoring me, so I really don’t know what you want from me!”
Reese stepped between us. “Um, okay. As much as I love seeing the two of you bicker, I am far too overwhelmed and overstimulated to try to referee,” he said sarcastically. I looked around and noticed we had a small audience discreetly trying to act like they weren’t paying attention to us.
“I personally think that you two should just go angry fuck somewhere so you can stop wasting everyone’s time. We’ll dissect Dimitri’s information tomorrow, so fix your shit or go the fuck to bed.” Elise rolled her eyes and made her way to the stairs, walking to the second floor.
I let out a sigh and flipped my hair over my shoulder. “Are you going to let me explain and talk to you or do you need more time to get your shit together?”
He looked at me, the anger still in his eyes. “Get my shit together? You were on his lap, Dani.Myshit is not the concern here.”
“Oh, I’m well aware, I was there, thank you for the recap,” I said with the fakest smile on my face. I acknowledged Reese, placing my hand on his shoulder. “Have a good night. Tell your friend to come find me when he’sready to have an actual conversation. This back and forth is really fucking boring and I don’t do well with being talkedatrather than talkedto.” I rolled my eyes at Nicholas before I twirled around and made my way up the stairs.
I heard Reese’s exasperated pleading voice. “Nick! Nick, fuck!”
Footsteps came behind me, but I didn’t look back. I had been pretty much thinking about him the entire time I was with Dimitri, but sure all he saw was me on some other guy’s lap. He wasn’t in my head; he didn’t know my thoughts. If he had been in the loop, the outcome would have been the same, I would have still ended up in that position. I didn’t do it for myself, I did it for more knowledge. I was being a team player, maybe not in the way he wanted but we all had our strengths and weaknesses.
I could feel him trailing behind me as I opened the door to my room. I strutted inside with all the sass I could muster. I had to admit that there was a small part of me that liked him when he was this annoyed, this overwhelmed. I tensed a bit when I heard the door slam behind me.
