“So, you monitored me when I came here?”

“If you want to call it that, sure. You didn’t seem to mind my monitoring, hmm. You had a smile on your face once I started giving you my attention. Besides, what you told me about all the things you’d had to do, I understood your need for the release, to be with other demons, fill your soul with desire and power.”

“You were a distraction,” I deadpanned, summing up his words.

“I was happy to do what Lilith wanted, so long as I got my end of the deal. You mystified me a little, Soul Seether. I nearly forgot about the deal entirely.” He almost sounded sincere…maybe he was. That didn’t matter to me. He placed his hands on my hips, flexing his fingers so my dress rode up a little. Those eyes bore into my back again, like Nicholas wanted me to turn around and look at him but I couldn’t, not right now.

“Do you happen to know what Lilith was doing while I was away, anything she confided in you about?” I tried to say innocently, running my hair through his hair. I moved my hips just a bit, so that he could feel the slide of my skin against his pants. If I moved to close, I would be able to feel his cock directly underneath me and that was something I wanted to avoid.

“All she said was that she had big plans for you. That made you more of an interesting pursuit.”

I cupped his chin in my hand. “I’m a pursuit, huh.”

“I’m not going to lie to you, Dani. And you are asking the questions, so if you don’t like the response…”

I released his chin and patted him on the cheek. “Shut up, we both know that doesn’t bother me, especially coming from you. Do you know about the demons that Lilith is voiding out?”

Dimitri looked off to the side, thinking. “I never got a chance to see one of her little voided experiments, but I knew everything was a ploy to get into Heaven’s Gate. I had wondered where you had disappeared off to since I usually saw you practically every other night. I thought she had ended your life or that she was ending our deal. She told me not to worry, that you were off fulfilling what needed to be done so that she and I would no longer be so limited. She had confidence you would succeed, but she was well aware of how headstrong you were, so she told me she had another plan if you went rogue. She said that sometimes a little taste of the other side could do wonders, but she left it at that.

“I asked her what her Enchanter was for, and she said she needed a way to move through realms since she was locked down here, but that would all change soon enough, one way or another. She had me, her Enchanter and that angel she was using. I can’t remember his name, nor do I care, and she said that the angelic realm would be so easily overtaken. She said letting you leave for Heaven’s Gate was the easiest plan but obviously here you are and here I am still holding up this place at Devil’s Playground. She’ll have to move to whatever she’s been planning for next.”

I hadn’t noticed that his hands were rubbing up and down my sides now, applying pressure every so often. “I assure you her angelic puppet is dead.” My eyes flared with the thought of Markus’s life draining from his eyes when I’d killed him.

“I can’t say I’m surprised. The company of angels isn’t always the best,” he sarcastically, throwing me a knowing grin. I shoved his shoulder and he chuckled. “You can’t expect me to not notice your angelic companions as much as they try to hide it, they do make a statement.” Nicholas was probably making a huge statement just staring at me, while he got ogled by demonic females. I could smell their pitiful amount of lust from here, but I blocked itout. At least I tried to. Rae had really fucked with my head with her feeble attempt to stake a claim on someone she wouldn’t even appreciate. Nicholas was good for a night, but he was so much more than that.

I rolled my eyes. “Have you spoken to Lilith lately?”

“No, but her blonde Enchanter has come in to speak with me on occasion, quite recently actually. She told me how you were back and as strong willed as ever, that Lilith hoped you would be just as vivacious and cutthroat as she left you. She told me to look out for you if you come by. I mean, Dani, you can’t honestly believe she isn’t watching you, that she isn’t in

your head because you have a connection with her whether you like it or not. You may have your own mind, but she’s in there even if you choose not to acknowledge it. You are one of the strongest things she’s ever created. And yes, she told me about your little hybrid status. Makes you all the moreenticingif I do say so.” He settled his hands on my hips again, using the heels of his hands to push the front hem of my dress up my thighs.

“You couldn’t lead with that?” I said, frustratingly. He was telling me things I already knew. What did me being strong and having this connection with her mean for whatever she was doing?

He gave me a one shoulder shrug. “I assumed that bit wasn’t important since that didn’t work for her while you were in Heaven’s Gate. You didn’t open the portal for her like she wanted, yet just because you didn’t do that doesn’t make her stop seeing you as a weapon. She wants to make you into a different type of weapon now. What kind I don’t know, so don’t ask.”

“You and I both know I could go in, darkness at hand, and fight, but she’s more calculating than that. I want answers from her, I want her to pay for the things she’s done, and the easy kill won’t get me that.”

Dimitri nodded. “Oh, I’m well aware and frankly so is she. Lilith likes to play games where she changes the rules constantly.”

“I’m always the pawn, though.”

“The prettiest pawn,” he complimented, trailing his hand up my arm and caressing my cheek. “She wants you to come to her, she wants you to choose her over them and everyone else. You are more valuable to her than her Enchanter and probably even me. Her most precious game piece.”

“I’ve never liked her games, and you shouldn’t either. Demons aren’t innocent by any means, but that doesn’t mean they deserve to have their souls taken out for experiments and fun. I did it to the ones who deserved it, I can’t say the same for her,” I spat out, venom on my tongue.

“Lilith is the kind to try and try again, until something is just right. Like a recipe, Dani. Some of the batches might not be right the first time, but when you find the one that’s just right, ah, that’s a game changer. She thought herfirst plan was good and it was but there was still something off and I think it was your freedom of choice. She thought you would seek power over the good will of others. Very bold, not that I’m surprised, coming from you. She couldn’t force you to do something when she allowed you a choice, so now she’s going to give you no choice” He pulled me closer to him, so that I was pushed further against his pelvis. And just like I suspected his cock was hard, but now I was comparing his size to someone else’s, and Dimitri didn’t even come close.

“I always have a choice, Dimitri.”

“Keep that mindset, pretty girl.” He flicked his green eyes over my shoulder as he sat up more, maneuvering me along the way. “You know we’ve done a lot of talking.”

“That was the point.”

The vein in the side of his neck pulsed slightly, moving one of his tattoos up and down. “You haven’t admitted once that you missed me.”

I pressed my tongue into my cheek. “Well, if I say it now, you wouldn’t believe me.”

Dimitri hummed. “Hmm, true. Is it because you have someone else in your bed?”
