I looked around and noticed there were demons that paid absolutely no attention to what was going on and then there were others who casually leaned up against the buildings to watch. They didn’t try to help, nor did they look nervous or uncomfortable in any way. I liked to think that this wasn’t an everyday occurrence for them, but I likely would have been wrong. Rio started to head towards Dani to help his friend, but Elise jumped onto his back, wrapping her arm under his chin and pulling upward. He staggered backwards and she pressed her hand on top of his shoulder, pushing herself up and leaped off him, while keeping a hold on his neck. He spun uncontrollably and she watched as he landed not too far from his friend.
“Remember the last time you were a dick to me, Rio? What I said I would do to you if you ever pissed me off again.” Her tail manifested from behind her and snaked around, stopping just between his legs. He struggled to try and move away, but she swiped the end of her tail along his legs, creating large gashes.
“Do you think we should interrupt them or…” Reese asked, tilting his head as he tried to take in what we were watching.
I slowly shook my head. “No, I think…I think they’ll be fine.”
Dani’s dagger came together from nothing but shadows as she got down to her victim’s level. She grazed her dagger over the side of his face, creating a deep cut. “Now you’ll have a scar to match the other one.” She brought the dagger down to his stomach and pressed the hooked part to his soaked shirt.
“We were just messing around, Soul Seether.” He instantly understood who she was, realizing how fucked he was.
“Oh well in that case—” She plunged the dagger in without hesitation and the man cried out. She reached for his head, pulling at his ponytail as she lifted his face to hers. “You plan to behave?”
He grunted from the strong grip that she had on him. She was likelypulling so hard at his scalp that I’m surprised she hadn’t ripped hair out by now. Her stance and the way she looked at him had me remembering how she had been with Markus. How she had demanded he give her answers, how she had handled her weapon using it for so much violence. Thoughts flashed through my mind, but I held myself up, not letting the thoughts run me over. I heard whispers along with the invading thoughts. They were the same whispers from my time with Natalia. They spun around my dark memories and threaded themselves within them as if they were trying to build a bond.
“Dani…” I started.
“Say it. You. Will. Behave.” Dani demanded of her victim as he yelped from her strain on his hair. She raised her dagger, inches away from stabbing him again.
“Yeah Rio, will you behave?” Elise taunted, replacing her tail with the toe of her boot right at his crotch.
“Dani…stop,” I urged, feeling my chest tighten. I felt a whisper of something whip across my neck, like a caress.
“Nick…” Reese said, grabbing my hand and lifting it up. I blinked down at it, my vision a bit unfocused and noticed small bits of light trying to come out. Angelic magic was powerful in its own right. It knew when it was needed even when you weren’t aware of it, but I didn’t understand why it was happening right now. I closed my hand and yanked my arm away from him.
“Dani, just stop,” I demanded, and her head shot up, finally acknowledging me. My brown eyes pleaded with her black ones. I liked her with this fire and fighting for herself, but fuck, I could feel myself going to that place I didn’t like to be.
Her eyes started to morph back into their normal state. She huffed out a breath and yanked him up by his hair, the shadows holding him disappearing along with her dagger. Dani dragged him over to me, the wound in his stomach bleeding out. She pushed him forward, so he was staring at me. “Apologize. You ran into him, did you not?”
His lips quivered and he looked like he wanted to fight back, but he didn’t. He swallowed hard and looked down at my fisted hands, noticing the light peeking out of them. “I’m not apologizing to a fucking angel…ow! Fuck!” Dani yanked his hair and rammed her fist into his spine.
“Say. It.”
He pressed his lips together, muttering a less than genuinesorry. Dani smiled. “Wasn’t that easy.” In one quick motion she had her dagger back and used it to slice his ponytail right off. She grabbed the hair and chucked it at him as she threw his body to the side. “Now get out of my fucking sight.”
I heard squealing as we looked over and saw Elise stepping right between Rio’s legs and then letting up, before standing to the side. “You should really worry about us being bitches, not whores. Not that your opinion matters much anyway. You piss me off again and I promise you, I will cut your dick off and make you eat it.” Rio got help from his friend getting up and they hustled backwards until they were far enough away to not need to look back.
“Umm, okay, well I don’t know whether to be surprised or impressed?” Reese admitted.
“We all know you are thoroughly impressed,” Elise answered.
Reese rolled his eyes as he looked over to me. “Can we go before you get into any more brawls?” He placed his hand on my arm and shook me lightly. “Are you okay? It’s like you went somewhere in your own head again.”
I nodded, stretching my neck by rolling my head in a circle. “Yeah, I’m fine. That was just…um, unexpected.”
Dani laughed. “Expect the unexpected, Nicholas. Especially in Devil’s Playground.” She walked past me, wrapping her hand around my fists, causing the whispers to create a low hum. As if she was controlling them in a way, with a power she didn’t know she had. “I did tell you that I would take good care of you.” She nodded over her shoulder towards what had been our prior destination.
“I knew bringing them would be a bad idea.” Elise mumbled. She shoved past us, and Dani followed.
Everyone around us went back to business as usual and I wondered how bad Leviathan really was.
NICK
The strobe lights crossed over each other, back and forth as they scattered across the walls of Leviathan. The outside was a tall brick building with large windows on the side. I couldn’t see anything on the inside though, telling me that the windows were blacked out, keeping the secrets of the club locked inside. The music that was playing could be heard from a mile away, but visually it hadn’t looked like anything special. The building was lined with neon red lights and there was an overhang above the door that had a bright yellowish light beaming down from it.
The inside was wider than I had imagined. There were neon red lights hanging from the ceiling, and they lined the walls in here as well illuminating the club in a deep sensual type of lighting. There was a long bar to my right and a massive dance floor that stood right in front of me and took over more of the left side. There was another bar I could see that was well across the room that looked just as busy as the one closest to us. A group of demon girls holding hands ran into us and headed towards another groupof demons on the dance floor. The music was playing from everywhere, but I couldn’t find the source, so I assumed that was also some sort of magic.
I noticed a small area of couches near the back where demons caught their breath or just simply mingled. I let my eyes glance over to where there was a wide staircase leading to the second floor, yet I couldn’t really make out what exactly was upstairs. I felt people looking at me, but I couldn’t really decide what those looks meant. I kept my guard up regardless.
