“I don’t know actually. But it’s over.”
Elise clucked her tongue and shrugged. “Alright, well we are oh, so happy you made it out unscathed pretty boy. Now tell us what the witch said.”
I had, in great detail, explained to the best of my ability everything that Natalia had told me. They all sat around patiently as I finished my retelling, well, as patient as Elise could get. She paced the room for half of it. When I had mentioned Natalia’s idea about talking to a demon to get more insight, Dani and Elise had both looked at each other. They silently spoke, in a world of their own before breaking eye contact. A few mumbled words about Isabel not being shit tumbled from Elise’s mouth as she walked out of the room, after we’d planned to reconvene later that night. Reese flopped back onto his bed but kept his eyes on me and Dani as she swung her legs around and pushed herself off of the bed.
I had to physically pull my eyes away from watching her walk away from me, even though I actually kind of enjoyed it. It was one of my most favorite views. She stopped and turned to face us; her eyes narrowed. “If you both want to leave, I wouldn’t blame you.”
“Leave?” We both said in unison. She nodded, waiting.
“Dani, we aren’t going to leave,” I stated, a little insulted by her words.
“I’m just saying. We won’t think less of you if you want to.”
Reese laughed. “Oh, right, cause little psycho demon back there won’t call us complete assholes if we just removed ourselves from the situation. As much as I don’t like this, we come as a package deal. So, if he wants to stay, then so am I.”
I smiled to myself. We may fight, but the end result was always undying loyalty. “We’re staying.”
“Good.” That was all she said before she turned around on the balls of her feet and strolled out of the room. Reese followed her with his eyes as she closed the door behind her. He looked back at me and whistled. He settled back in his bed, throwing his hands behind his head. “Are you sure you’re good?”
I nodded.
“And you want to stay here and continue to do this? Play Lilith’s little game, fight her distractions as Natalia put it.” He wasn’t trying to get me to change my mind, but he was trying to get me to tell him point blank what I was thinking.
“Yeah, I do,” I answered, but then quickly added. “And it’s not for Dani’s sake, well not completely.”
Reese chuckled. “I gotcha. As long as you’re sure… abouteverything.” He made sure his last word was drawn out, like he was insinuating something other than the mission in front of us. He was making sure that I was sure about a certain hybrid that just left the room. I looked over at him and saw that he was looking right back at me. His hazel eyes were friendly, but they gave off a mischievous tone. He rolled his eyes, before closing them.
I heard Reese softly snoring next to me as I stared at the ceiling. I felt better than I had before, but Natalia’s words kept replaying in my head over and over again. I couldn’t really continue to ponder on how to fix this Lilith ordeal, at least not without everyone present, so I just focused on the one thing I could control. There was one person I needed to talk to, and I was dreading doing it the whole time it kept circling back to the forefront of my mind.
“Fuck it,” I told myself as I jumped off my bed and made my way to the door. I opened it quickly, stepping out into the hallway and walking towards the stairs. I severely hoped that Elise was downstairs, or I would likely find some excuse to go back to my room, forgetting about this whole thing.
I took the stairs cautiously, peeking my head around the corner to see into the lounge area. I saw the top of her black hair as she sat on one of thecouches with Beetee. I hurried down the rest of the stairs, catching Beetee’s eye.
“Nicholas, I’m surprised to see you down here.” Beetee smiled at me and moved further onto the couch.
Elise turned her head enough to bring me into her view. “Ah, I thought you and Blondie would be snuggled up taking a nap together.” I walked around the couch towards one of the smaller couches. I noticed Axel laying at Elise’s feet, his eyes were closed, and his little head was burrowed underneath one of his paws.
“Ha, very funny.”
“I was just filling Beetee in on everything so far,” Elise offered.
Beetee brought her legs up and cradled them to her chest. “Anything on your mind?”
I licked my lips, not quite sure how to say what I wanted to say. “Umm, yeah, well—”
“You want to know how to get back into Dani’s panties?”
I cut my eyes to Elise, who blinked back at me as if she hadn’t said one of the bluntest statements I had ever heard. “What?”
“I don’t believe I stuttered, Nicholas.”
“Ellie, you really are a terror, aren’t you?” Beetee shook her head, kicking her foot out and connecting it with Elise’s arm.
This was a bad idea. I ran a hand through my hair and let out an exasperated sigh. “I’ll just head back upstairs now.” I was halfway off the couch when Elise spoke. “Sit down, Nicholas.”
I hovered for a moment but did as she said. I noticed that the kitchen and even beyond towards the dining room was littered with Enchanters and demons. Not too many to fill the rooms, but enough to have me wonder where she puts them all.
“I hope you aren’t expecting me to give you some profound love advice because if that’s the case then you can take your demon obsessed ass right upstairs,” she challenged.
