Beetee cleared her throat. “I’m pretty sure she glamoured herself so that only Dani could see and hear her, but—”

“But, when you stabbed her hand, it was like that severe pain caused her to let go of her glamour. That’s when we all saw her,” I cut in, leaning back on my hands.

“Makes perfect sense to me,” Dani said, leaning against the wall.

“Let’s not make it a habit though alright, you know, you running into the woods.” Elise didn’t wait for a response when she was finished speaking. I heard her grumble, glad you’re fineunder her breath as she passed Dani when she stomped out of the room. If Dani had heard it as well, she didn’t show any indication that she cared.

A soft knock came at the door. A man with cropped short blonde hair cautiously looked into the room. Beetee rushed over to him as he handed her a clear jar of translucent liquid. From where I was sitting there was a slight sparkle to the contents. “Thanks, Blake. I’ll be out in a minute.” The man nodded and quickly scurried out of sight.

“Hmm, I thought you said they were all so happy to see us fighting for them and they were all against Lilith and what not? That guy didn’t even want to step into the room with us,” Reese questioned, furrowing his blonde brows.

“Well, I don’t like being rude, so I’ll put it plainly, I guess. You two are angels, the beings that stormed in and practically destroyed his home.” Beetee looked apologetic as if her words were offensive and cruel.

“Hey.” She looked over at me when I spoke to her, “It’s fine and understandable.”

Reese groaned. “Oh yeah, it’s totally fine that he is so comfortable with the demon princess over there, but not us.” He hooked his thumb over his shoulder and pointed at Dani.

“Or maybe he doesn’t like the stench of your arrogance. It’s literally filling up the whole room. I’m fucking suffocating over here,” she retorted, examining her nails without a care in the world. “You can’t expect them to just fucking trust you.”

Reese barked out a laugh. “Trust? You are one to talk with all your fucking trust issues.”

Dani pushed off the wall and right when I thought I would have to muster all my strength and stop her from pummeling him, she walked right past him and took the jar from Beetee’s hands. “Is this for his wounds?”

The pink-haired demon nodded, shifting from one foot to the other. She had a different dress on than before. This one was bright yellow and strapless with pockets in the front. She pointed to the jar and then to Reese. “I wasgoing to let him do it…”

Dani looked over her shoulder and up at Reese, shrugging. “No, I got it, thanks. You can all leave.”

“Excuse me, he’s my friend,” Reese argued, “I’ll do it.” He tried to grab the jar from her, but she whirled around and shoved him back.

“Okay okay, stop. Reese, it’s alright.” I gave him a look that caused him to let out a huff of defeat. He really was the world’s best guard dog. I blinked over to Dani who was starting to unscrew the top off the jar and headed towards the countertop that took over an entire corner of the room. “I’ll talk to you when I’m done.”

Reese raised his head towards the ceiling. “Whatever, fine.” Beetee started to follow him out of the room, but not before I heard him ask, “so did you turn into a fucking snake earlier?” Beetee’s high pitched giggle echoed in the hall as the door closed behind them.

A snake? How long had I been out?

The oxygen in the room seemed to be pulled when it was just me and her. There was silence and it was fucking awkward, but comfortable for us. I reached up to touch the side of my face that got hit and hissed once the pads of my fingers touched the raised cuts.

“You shouldn’t be touching it, who knows if there are remnants of her venom still on it,” she warned. Dani placed a bowl of water, washcloths, and the jar of translucent substance on a steel tray and walked over to me. She placed the tray next to me and suddenly grabbed my face, turning my head to the side.

“She got you good.”

“It was an accident.”

She raised an eyebrow at me. “Are you defending her?”

“No, I just know it was none of our faults and Isabel is the cause of me being in this very uncomfortable state.”

Dani hummed, letting go of my face and snatching a cloth. “Lilith is the reason, Nicholas. Isabel is just a pet. She does her bidding, just like everyone else we’ve come across that has anything to do with her.” She dipped the cloth in the water and brought it to my face. The water was warm as it hit my cheek, but I flinched and started to rear back as she pressed it into my wound. Dani let up and started patting around the tender flesh.

“You big baby.”

“It fucking stings.”

“I could sedate you. Knock you out and then clean it. Would you like that?” she asked sarcastically, pressing her tongue into her cheek.

I rolled my eyes and let her continue, biting my tongue. There wasn’tas much pain after a minute once I started to focus on something other than the stinging. Her scent started to wrap itself around me and I had to fight my instincts not to touch her, not to try and bring her closer to me. She was close, so close that I could make out every single one of her eyelashes, but she still wasn’t close enough. I wanted her wrapped around me, breathing me in as if she felt all the same things I did.

“Stop,” she said, putting the cloth down and picking up the jar, sticking her finger inside and scooping out some of the contents. I noticed it had a wet consistency as some of it dripped off her finger and onto the tray.
