“Like I said I didn’t hear anything. I mean there was a storm out there, so you two picked a great night to do it.”

“Ew, Dad, stop. It’s not like we planned for this ahead of time.”

“Nicholas, I know.” He shot his hip out and placed it against the back of the couch. “You like her?”

“I don’t know. I think so. Maybe. Is this where you tell me I shouldn’t have had sex with her if I was unsure how I felt about her?”

He shook his head. “No, not at all. If I said that, I would be the world’s biggest hypocrite.”

I sighed in relief. “Good, because that ship has sailed. It’s not like this was the first time…” I trailed off, realizing all the words I was spewing. Of course, right now I would become a babbling idiot.

Fuck.

His eyes widened as I looked up at him from where I sat. Usually, we could look eye to eye, but right now, I was shorter than him and he was towering over me. His eyes didn’t look surprised, though; they almost danced, amusement lighting up the small wrinkles at the corners of his eyes. “Oh, you have it bad, son.”

I tried to shrug in a noncommittal fashion. “What if it’s just sex?” This is not a conversation for almost nine in the morning, but there was no turning back now.

“Nicholas, you are the string attached type of man, and I respect that. I hate to break it to you, poor boy, but you like this girl enough to have all night, in your room, while your dad sleeps five feet away sex with her.”

I gaped at him, my mouth open and everything. “What makes you think I—we— were up all night? Presumptuous much.”

My father held onto his stomach as he laughed, not because I had told a joke, but because he actually thought what I said was hilarious. “As much as you try to hide it, you look like you’ve been up all night,” he said with a smirk, which made me want to vomit, but not before I heard laughter coming from down the hall.

We looked up as the two women came around the corner. Dani had abandoned her clothes from yesterday and was now wearing a gray and white crop top and black leggings. Her hair was still wet, but she had braided it and let it sit on one of her shoulders. I tried my hardest to avert my eyes, but they kept tracing the lines of her waist, the curve of her ass in those leggings, and my hands ached to touch the small sliver of smooth brown skin that revealed itself when her top rode up a bit. I had to ball my hands into fists to try to restrain myself. She turned slightly so she could tell Daya something, and then both women laughed again.

“What’s so funny?” my dad asked, pointing between the two of them.

Daya waved her hand at him. “Oh, just girl things. Nothing you need to worry your pretty head about.”

“Damn, Dad. I like her,” I laughed, causing my father to run his hand over my shoulder and laugh as well, his laugh a little darker, like he was about to make me regret my comment.

He nodded over to Dani. “Alright then. Well Dani, how did you sleep?”

Dani placed her eyes directly on mine, but before I could really let my eyes bore into hers, she looked away and focused on my father. The glint in her eyes had me feeling like they were both conspiring against me. “Really good.” I didn’t realize I had been holding my breath until she stopped speaking, and I opened my mouth to let it out. I was going to mention us going to the table to eat when she continued. “Yeah, I was able to get a really good, deepsleep. Extremelysatisfying.” She smirked, and I could feel my heart crashing and my brain malfunctioning.

I felt my dad’s hand hitting my back when I started coughing uncontrollably. Daya started to come over, but I put my hand up to stop her. She looked over to my father, who gave her a small smile and shook his head. She raised one of her eyebrows but walked to her coffee mug instead.

“Well, that’s great, sweetheart. Nick was just telling me how he had a good night sleeping on the couch. All by himself, of course. He was very adamant about that part.” I heard the sarcastic tone in my father’s voice, and I have never wanted to punch my own father in the face as much as I wanted to right now.

Dani cocked her head to the side, letting her tongue quickly trace her bottom lip. “Are you sure, Mr. Cassial, because he looks a little tired. He looks like he might have expelled a lot of energy last night. No, no, not expelled, hmm… maybeejaculateda lot of energy?”

Daya was now the one who started coughing, right as she lifted her mug to her lips. My father let out a deep belly laugh, and I sat there, lowering my face into my hands. I glanced up from my hands after a moment and noticed Dani as she walked—no, she sauntered—over to me, her hips swaying. “What on earth did you do last night to make you so tired, Nicholas?” She said my name with such a sharp tone.

“I feel like I’m missing something,” Daya said, looking at each of us suspiciously.

My father came up next to her, grabbing his coffee mug. “I’ll explain it to you later. For now, let’s eat before the food gets cold. You both have a long day ahead, that’s for sure.” He and Daya placed their mugs on the table and went to go grab the orange juice cups I’d left on the counter.

Dani reached out and trailed her fingertips along my neck and up to my jaw when they turned away from us. She brought her fingers to the center of my chin and placed her thumb at my bottom lip, pulling it down. She sank her teeth into her lower lip and let my trapped lip go. “You smell like good sex,” she said in the softest and most breathy tone I have ever heard. It came out neutral, as if the soft part was meant just for me.

She started to turn away from me and walk towards the table, but I followed behind her, letting my hand brush along hers as I passed her. “You smell likegreatsex.”

Breakfast went on as if everything was normal in the world, as if we could just forget that beyond this house and the extending tree line, something was happening that none of us could really pin down with a solid answer. My mind had wandered during their conversations, and I went down my never-ending spiraling path that led to even more questions and even fewer answers. I tried to shake it off as best I could, and for the most part, no one seemed to notice when I would drift off.

Daya answered any and all questions I had for her, which weren’t as many as I think my dad thought it would be. I learned that her daughter, Alex, was two years younger than me and highly interested in fashion. She had been adamant at a young age that any part of The Skies was not for her, and she was happy in the village, pursuing her dreams. Her husband had died from a heart attack five years ago and when she talked about it, my father reached out his hand and clasped it around hers. Her husband had also been a guardian angel during her time at The Skies and she was happy with the years they had together. I could see she kept the happy memories close to her heart – she smiled when she spoke about her late husband.

She admitted to me that she was nervous, rightfully so, about me being so closely involved with demons, then coming in this morning to the information my father gave her about everything that had happened. It was a lot, but she believed my father when he told her I was a smart kid who knew what I was doing. Boy, did he have a shit ton of faith in me, because my faith in myself was wearing thin. Daya laughed at her own words when she finally admitted Dani was the most un-demon-like demon she had ever come across. Granted, that was before the war, before things got so fucking complicated for everyone, and she reevaluated the things she thought she knew.

Dani smiled over at her at the mention of her name and then snuck a glance over at me from across the table. Dani asked questions when the conversation would grow silent, ranging from my early life before The Skies all the way to the Animus Seeking, which she had seen from her window when she and Elise were stuck in their room. Her eyes lit up when I spoke about going to the human world. She listened like she was plainly intrigued, hanging onto every word I said. I had to restart a few of my sentences because the brazenly unapologetic demon decided to trail her foot along my leg and up towards my knee. I practically jumped out of my seat at the contact and had to immediately act like I was readjusting my position. I shook my head at her and watched as she took another bite of food to hold her laugh in, but then she did it again a few moments later, causing me to just get up from the table and put my plate away. She gave me a fake pout as I passed her, but I just rolled my eyes and adjusted my stirring dick in my pants.
