Once I got to Italy, I could get lost and truly become someone else for a little while. Having no ties was great, it was freeing, but you did forget who you were for a little while. It also sucked making friends and having to disappear, losing those friends.
One day.
One day I knew I’d be able to be Bridget again, and I could be free to live in Ireland, amongst the pure beauty that was the Emerald Isle. Until then, I would continue being under the radar and living on the run.
The jets of the plane hummed to life, and I felt my anxiety rise. I hated planes, and being on a small private jet wasn’t helping me any. I gripped onto the sides of the seat and tried to convince myself that I was going to be okay, that people flew every day and nothing happened to them.
“Are you okay?” Sloane asked me. I opened my eyes and looked up at her, and that kind smile. She was nothing like Teeghan, even though I knew they were best friends. She was kinder, and more civil than Teeghan. Maybe she could help me.
“I just hate flying.”
She smiled, as she slipped into the seat opposite me. “Same, but luckily, it’s a short flight.”
“How short?”
“3 hours,” she replied. “But on this thing, it’s so smooth. You’ll not even know you’re in the air, and most of these things have great food on them.”
“You’ve been on a lot of these?”
“Killian has taken me to a few places, yeah,” she said. “Honestly, you’re safe. I had my reservations too, and I even married someone else before getting back with Killian, but I’ve never felt so safe ever.”
“Even though you are now travelling to a foreign country to get away from their shit?” I shoot back.
She sighed. “You’ve come into Lorcan’s life at a bad time, sure, but for the most part, we all live happily in Ireland. You’ll see.”
I didn’t want to admit to her what I planned on doing once we landed. She was nice. I could see she wasn’t built for this life, but she loved Killian. I got it, but I also knew what could happen to someone as sweet as her.
When you held power, you were also a target and if you weren’t, you were a dark motherfucker.
Sloane stayed with me while we took off, and my panic rose inside.
Once we were in the air, I noticed Sloane had been right, I could barely feel that we weren’t on the ground. Sloane moved off, leaving me be and joined Teeghan again. I could feel Teeghan’s eyes on me, but I paid her no attention. I looked out the window at the clouds below me, and suddenly a sense of freedom erupted around me.
I was out of Ireland, somehow without a passport, and on my way to Italy, a country I’d always wanted to visit.
Maybe I could wait this thing out, see what Lorcan wanted from me. I mean…if he could handle the problem with my family coming after me, then maybe I could stop running and maybe, just maybe, I could stay put anyway.
The thought was tantalising even if I knew it was a dream, it was still nice to daydream.
Lorcan
Saverio was waiting in the wings for me to make my call. Killian and Conor, both annoyed at having to send their women away, stood to the other side with their arms crossed. It was for the best, I knew it was, because we’d all be fucking distracted with them around.
“Look,” I said to everyone gathered, all our allies who had come from near and far to help us. “I know this was a massive favour to ask of all of you, but we appreciate it. Our home is your home, take a room, rest up, we’ll have a dinner tonight and tomorrow…we go to war.”
Everyone dispersed, and I looked over at everyone who had come to our aid, taking note of who wasn’t here.
Those were who I needed to watch out for.
Ace and his men were looking around, unsure if they should stay on the estate, and given they were close by, I didn’t mind if they left but I needed them on point. They knew more than they were saying, and I knew it.
“Lorcan,” I heard the thick russian accent that could only be from Vlad Antonov. He was a surprising ally. Of all of the members of Onyx, I expected him to be one who wanted to lay claim to Ireland. I smiled as I took his proffered hand. “I must say this is terrible business. Never did I think Onyx would be torn apart over a piece of land.”
“I fear it goes further than that.”
“So you know of the Reyes plans?”
“No, but please do share.”
