Pierce made a move over to me. “Hendrix is on his way with Elias.”
“Why the fuck is he coming?”
“Apparently he’s pledging his club to Hendrix. Safety in numbers, right?”
“Take him out.”
Pierce nodded. “Consider it done.”
“Pierce.”
He stopped and turned back to me. “Elias, not Hendrix. He may be useful yet.”
Pierce nodded again and disappeared into the darkness. I kept my eye open as more people filled the room.
Sonora zeroed in on me and started to make her way over. “Lennon, how nice to see you.”
“Sonora,” I replied with a forced smile, and I kissed her on the cheek. “Looking as gorgeous as always.”
“Such a sweet boy. Is Presley here?”
“Not yet. I think she’s tied up with something.”
“Oh good, this probably wouldn’t go her way, anyway. I’d hate for her to be in trouble.”
I had to play along without upsetting her too much. Sonora had gotten away with a lot, and I knew if she signalled to the right people, she’d be able to get away unharmed. I made eye contact with York who came over to introduce himself. I made my exit then, waiting for Presley to make an appearance. Where the hell was she?
“Looking for someone?” I heard a familiar voice say.
It was Hendrix. I turned to see Rudie draped over him, dressed in an exceptionally tight pink dress. Her hair was platinum blonde, a change to the bright red I was used to seeing, and she looked off her face.
Perfect.
“Where’s Elias?” I asked him. He seemed surprised but didn’t miss a beat.
“Pierce is speaking with him about the protection detail.”
I knew what that meant. Elias was dead already.
“You didn’t tell me we were this close to a decision.”
“I know…how did you find out? Didn’t trust me?”
“It appears I may have been right about that. Might have been nice knowing my sister is a contender.”
“Are you worried about her?”
“No, I highly doubt she could be considered. I mean, she’s never run a business and she’s a woman.”
Rudie giggled. “Plus, she’s more worried about what you think about her.”
“You don’t know Presley, Rudie. Trust me, she’s not the same girl she used to be.”
“You sound like she’s shoved you to the side. Maybe you should come back under Hendrix’s control.”
“Rudie, fuck off.”
She slinked off, wounded by being told off but it wouldn’t be long until she was either snorting something up her nose or moving a hand up under her dress.
