“Are you going to quibble over legal ethics with me or are you going to serve me like you served Gideon?”

“He was a friend.”

“I don’t care, you forget, Jervis. I know your family, I know what makes you tick. I can do more damage to you than anyone else, including Deacon. He has no loyalty after all.”

He was trying to figure it out for himself, I could see the wheels turning. York was looking impatient behind Jervis who still hadn’t realized it wasn’t just me and him.

“I—I can…I can try and doctor it to include your name but no one will believe it. They all know where he sent you, and why.”

“Then I want you to doctor it so that it has Jett Black to take over.”

“Jett Black?” His lip quivered. “He’ll be there?”

“Yes, he’s in town to follow up on what’s going on here.”

Jervis was breathing heavily, scared out of his mind.

“Enough of this,” York suddenly grunted, and stood up. Jervis launched himself out of the chair and against the bookcase. I’ve never seen a human move so fast in my life, like a scared cat. “You’ll do as she says or I’ll hunt down everyone you care about and give you a reason to be scared.”

“I can do it…I can do it.”

“Do it now,” York said. “If any other name than Jett Black is read out, I will finish this conversation with you.”

I was a little annoyed York was pushing his own agenda on this; he was meant to be my backup, not the man who made the decisions. I stood up and we left Jervis to shit himself in his own office. Once we were back in the car, I turned on him.

“Why did you do that?”

“You were taking too long.”

“You need patience with these things, he could have given me more.”

“No, he wouldn’t have, and you need to do what needs to be done. Jett would have killed him within five minutes.”

“We need him for the reading.”

“And then?”

“We’ll see how much use he can be to the organization.”

“You’re being too kind.”

“I’m finding my feet,” I spat at him. “I need information, and you are not helping. Don’t undermine me again.”

Chapter Six

As I passed the guards, I made my move down the halls of the chateau, and toward the office. It was open and empty. Where the hell else would she be? In the business room? Memories of our time in there came flooding back and then the cruel backhand to get out after I’d brought her to climax. She was going to listen to me this time. I was going to prove to her I was worth keeping around.

I moved through the chateau, keeping away from the doorways and slinking through the halls like I used to do when I’d come to visit Presley when we first started defying Gideon by being together. She wasn’t in the entertainment room either. Goddamn it, where the hell was she?

Moving down the halls, I looked in all the obvious places until I smelt something familiar.Vanilla Spice.

I knew where she was.

Taking off down the hall, I moved into Naomi’s old room, and there through the splice of light I could see the light on in the bathroom and the sweet smell of bath salts and candles burning.

Presley had always loved her mother’s spa bath, a huge tub to relax in, or in our case, a tub we’d spent a few hours in when Naomi had been passed out in the bed just feet away. It wasn’t disturbing to us, we’d been hiding our romance for weeks by this point and took advantage of any time we could spend together.
