“Need me to talk to her?” Sonora asked, desperate to help me for some reason.

“I think this situation calls for someone…a little more intimidating.”

“Jett?”

“Worse — Ebony.”

“Do you think that’s wise?”

I looked up, trying to discern why she would be so against Ebony doing her thing. Sonora detested Naomi, well as much as anyone would dislike their ex-husband’s new wife, I guess. I don’t think Sonora had it in her to hate anyone, not even her husband who used and abused her.

“Ebony is unhinged.”

“Yes, I know, and guess what, I’ve been with the men she surrounds herself with for the past ten years thanks to daddy dearest. I’m slightly unhinged too.”

“You wouldn’t kill your parents,” Sonora added. “Ebony did that without hesitation.”

I didn’t want to admit to her that it was me who had killed her true love. I doubt she’d forgive me for it, and I think I still needed to keep her around for a little while.

“If you can’t handle what’s going to happen here, maybe you shouldn’t be in on it all.”

“You want to kick me out?” she asked, a smile on her face. “Look, my father was the head of this crime family once, and my husband was too. I know how hard you have to be to make your mark in this business, and yes, I get it Pres, you will have to do more to prove you are just as great as a man at the job, but choose wisely. If you destroy the wrong person, you’ll have an entire army on your back.”

“Sonora, I know what I’m doing,” I told her. Jett and York were here for a reason, and that was to secure my spot at the table. I had been training for this for years, when I’d become strong enough to overcome whatever they had thrown at me. “If you are starting to question me, I need you to be honest.”

“Presley, I’ve known you since you were a baby, I helped you to learn the business. I knew Gideon did something stupid with you, but Jett Black is scary to deal with, he can change his mind in the blink of an eye.”

“So can most of who Gideon dealt with.”

She nodded. “Tannis is someone you need to really watch.”

“I appreciate it, Sonora.”

She pushed out of her chair. “You’ll find everything you need about the accounts in the safe.”

“I raided it already.”

“Not that safe,” she said, blowing my mind. Gideon had secrets after all. “The one in the bedroom. It’s behind the large portrait on the wall.”

That floor to ceiling horrific portrait of Naomi and Gideon they’d had constructed in their bedroom, which only went to prove what cocky fucks they were. Of course, it would be the perfect place to hide it.

“I’m heading out of the city for a couple of days, you can reach me on my number.”

She left the office before I could say goodbye. I knew she was leaving because she didn’t want to see what I was about to do, but now wasn’t the time to feel sorry for her. I needed money to bankroll my play for the head seat, and the only way to do that was to find the money Gideon was hiding.

Chapter Three

Presley

York stood with his arms crossed over his chest as he took in the horrid portrait of my father and mother. The look on his usually unreadable face told me everything and I fought not to laugh. Even I had hated this portrait when they’d had it commissioned.

“He slept in that bed and woke up to this every morning?” York asked.

“Yep.”

“Wow.”

“I told you.”
