Two of his men moved off and joined a group by the other side of the room. I sat opposite him, waiting for him to ask me again what I was doing here but he stayed silent.

Thinking he had the best of me, I simply waited. His younger brother was eyeing me up and down, but I paid him no nevermind. He didn’t matter, and neither did Chet, but I did need to know where my brother was.

“I heard you’ve been speaking to Hendrix.”

Chet was surprised, but hid it quickly. “He’s been by.”

“What did he want?”

“Simply to catch up.”

“Word has it, he wanted to overthrow me.”

“Most people do, Presley,” he replied quickly. “You got your seat by intimidation.”

“Which is the game we all play, Chet. How do you think my father earned that seat?”

“Gideon was good at it.”

“And he was foolish enough to go and die, so now I have the seat. Will you tell me what Hendrix offered you or not?”

“He didn’t offer me anything.”

“Chance.”

Chance pulled out his shotgun and shot Chet’s little brother in the chest. Chet called out for his brother, but it was too late, the shot was direct to the heart.

Damn, Chance.

“You think I’m going to be loyal to the one who just killed my brother?”

“I’d say you might want to be.”

“Or what?” he spat angrily. “You are a nobody, you don’t know how this business works because you were never a part of it.”

“You’re right, I wasn’t and that’s why I’m changing things, Chet,” I said, standing up again. “But I can see you can’t be swayed, so here…”

I pulled the grenade from my jacket pocket and pulled the pin, throwing it at him. I knew he’d catch it, he wasn’t dumb enough to let it go because he loved his life too much.

“You dumb bitch,” he swore. “This isn’t real.”

“Then drop it,” I smiled at him. He clung to it, for dear life, and everyone around him was frozen with fear.

I moved out of the door and laughed as Chance took his shot and got Chet’s arm. He dropped the grenade and looked down at it as if he’d just made the dumbest mistake of his life.

Well, partially, he was right. The dumbest mistake he’d made was turning against me.

Chance and I took off, toward the car, hearing the bang from behind us. We continued on our way.

“Who’s next?” I asked him.

“That’s not enough for today?”

“Nope.”

“Damn, sis. Okay, well I guess we could hit Jaden’s.”

“Jaden Petrovski?”
