A nervous expression crossed her face. “Jett.”
“Progress?”
“I’m almost there.”
“It’s taking longer than I thought it would.”
I moved closer to her looking at the paperwork on the desk in neat piles. Anyone who kept a neat desk like this wasn’t busy trying to win over senior senators for me.
“A bunch of old stiffs loyal to their wives, but I’ll bust them open soon enough.”
I circled the desk moving around to her side. “Do you have any contacts we can use?”
She cautiously nodded. I didn’t believe her for a second.
“What’s wrong?” she asked me. “You look angry.”
“I am,” I honestly told her. “I need you to find someone for me.”
“Okay, who?”
“John Lambert.”
She frowned writing down the name on a notepad on her desk before straightening. “Who is he?”
I grabbed her throat, slamming her against the closest wall. Her feet were off the ground as she struggled to get free. “Don’t act like my friend. We’re not friends, you work for me, understand? You do what I ask, when I ask, with no questions.”
She nodded, her eyes wide.
“Good. You fuck this up, and I’ll shove that stapler on your desk so far up your ass you’ll be tasting metal.”
Her eyes got even wider, didn’t think that was possible, as they shot to the desk. I let her go and joined York at the door.
“I want results today.”
“Today?” she croaked, rubbing her throat.
I turned back to her. She cowered back against the wall. “Okay.”
York and I left the office together heading down to the Lincoln before I did something I would potentially regret.
EBONY
I could barely feel my feet. Who knew how long I had been here hanging from the chains? My arms were sore, aching, and I felt my stomach rumble. The door opened, John appearing before closing the door behind him.
“Had time to think, pet?”
“About what?”
“Why… your new predicament, of course.”
“Whatever.”
“We can do this one of two ways… comfortable or painful. I’m sure your body is aching by now. Why not make it easier on yourself?”
“Fuck you.”
I spat on the ground in front of him. He chuckled, looking down at it and back at me. “Very well.”
