Page 47 of Mine, Forever

He stopped in his tracks, looking back at me with a stunned expression on his face. “Was that a confession?”

I shrugged. “Were you recording it?”

He bit down, grinding out his response. “No.”

“Then I guess you’ll have to work a little harder to get me to squeal. Now, run off little piggy.”

He moved off again confidently walking back to the doorway. I started to laugh, knowing I had him on edge. I couldn’t stop, not even when he turned back to me as he was about to close the door.

I continued to make little oinking noises even after he closed the door, locking me in darkness. Huddling up on the rotting mattress, I laughed, singing to myself.

Jett was coming.

He was coming for me.

JETT

“This had better be good news,” I said, not looking up as my office door opened. My mood had become sour as the minutes passed knowing Ebony was locked away in those damn cells without a hope in the world of getting out.

“Boss?”

I looked up at York standing in the doorway with his arms crossed over his chest.

“What is it?”

“Lamb is here.”

“Let him in.”

I pushed my new laptop aside and sat back in my chair waiting for the rat to enter. It didn’t surprise me when he came in looking as if he’d been ready to run with his tail between the legs.

“Jett.”

“Sit.”

He quickly did so. I could have sworn a secret force had been shoving him down. His fingers were twitching as he nervously rubbed them together.

“What do you have for me?”

“Jett, I can’t do it. I don’t have that much sway, yet.”

“You’d better get me some damn results and quick, Joe. I’m not kidding. If Ebony isn’t out of lockup in the next forty-eight hours, I’ll come for you.”

Joe shuddered, his bottom lip trembling. I’d obviously put my faith in the wrong politician for my purposes. York had been right. Joe was going to crumble under the pressure I needed to put him under for my organization.

“Go and get me some damn results.”

Joe nodded moving toward the door. He stopped before opening it, turning back to me. “Why is she so important?”

Surprised, I looked at him as if he were a dead man walking because, quite frankly, he was walking that line with me. He knew better than to ask questions of that nature.

“Why aren’t you getting her out of lockup?”

Joe left without another word.

It was a valid question. Even I didn’t know the answer, but all I did know was if I didn’t get Ebony back, nothing would be the same again.
