Page 36 of Mine, Forever

“What makes you think I didn’t enjoy killing them all?”

James sat back in his chair, silent for a while. “You want to know who to trust in the organization?”

I nodded, happy to have this little probe into my life done. I didn’t like talking about my family, never have. For someone like James to ask, I wasn’t comfortable with it. Hell, I wouldn’t even be comfortable opening up to Jett about this shit. The only reason I hadn’t pulled my pistol out was that I needed his help.

“Me, York, and Jett. We are the only ones who don’t do things in a roundabout way. We shoot from the hip, so to speak, and we don’t like negligence. If you want someone to watch, it’s Ty. He’s the one who thinks he runs things just because he had a record at a young age.”

“Do you have a family?” I suddenly asked.

“Yes.”

“What do they think of your career choice?”

“It’s because of my career choice they’re still alive.”

I didn’t quite know what to think about that or how that even worked, but I left it alone. James seemed to know a lot about the organization which meant he could also help me. “Who is John Lambert?”

“Jett tell you something about him?”

I shook my head. “Not yet.”

“It’s best Jett tell you. I wouldn’t want a bullet in the brain for telling you too much, too early on. After all, we don’t know if we can trust you yet or not.”

For some reason, although he hadn’t given me a lot of information, I liked him. He wasn’t someone who messed about with words. I could see why Jett and York trusted him.

“Come on. I’ll take you through the operations of Zeta’s. I’m sure Jett left you with a job to do.”

As he took me through the job, I tried not to give too much away. Jett was going to hear all about my work leading up to the kill. I couldn’t mess up on day one.

???

“Any luck?” York asked as I came into the office early the next day.

“James seems informative.”

“Don’t tell Jett you admire another man, please.”

I chuckled. “He doesn’t seem to like Ty, though.”

York paused while he did paperwork on the desk. “That’s interesting.”

“Why?”

“Well, he hired Ty and brought him into the organization. Are you sure that’s what he said?”

York knew what he was doing. He was cutting me a break and giving me a hint, even though Jett wanted me to do it alone. For some reason, York was on my side.

“He said something about Ty being someone to watch.”

“So you presumed he didn’t like Ty?” York smirked at me forcing an eye roll from myself.

“I’d like to go to his club.”

“Ty doesn’t run a club yet. He’s a security guard at Carbon.”

“Okay.”

“Chaz runs Carbon. I’ll tell him you’re coming by,” York said, pulling his cell from his jeans.
