EBONY
The bitch was talking to someone in the foyer of her office building. I patiently waited, my gun concealed. Jett was out of town on business again, leaving me to roam around the city to do as I pleased. For some reason, York had been busy rounding up more men, building an army, he’d said, and hadn’t had much time for me. I’d been in the office down at the warehouse taking in the filing and looking through accounts when I’d stumbled across an email from her to Jett.
Today her flirting with my man would stop, and she’d turn into my bitch. She finally stopped talking and began walking up the stairs to her office. I took the elevator and beat her to it, walking past her secretary who eyed me warily but said nothing when I showed her my Glock, and entered Erin’s office. I sat in her seat, putting my feet up on the desk, waiting for her to walk in.
She did after a moment’s hesitation, probably wondering where her secretary had gone. My Glock always scared the bejeesus out of people.
“Ebony?” she stopped in the doorway, weighing up her options to run or to stay. “What are you doing here?”
“Wanted a chat… woman to woman.”
She quickly closed her door and moved to the seat in front of the desk. “Sure, can I help with something?”
“Never show so much eagerness, Erin. That’s a sure fire way of getting someone to walk all over you. Look, I know you like my man, but he’s mine, and he’ll always be mine so I need you to back the fuck off.”
“I didn’t mean—”
“Don’t chicken your way out. Stand up to me. Jesus! I’m not going to shoot you for speaking your mind unless you really piss me off.”
“I don’t want Jett,” she said. “Honestly, he’s attractive and powerful, but he’s not the one I want.”
I looked into her eyes, surprised she wasn’t flinching.Could she be telling the truth?
“That email—”
“That wasn’t to Jett. He never answers his emails, the person who answers them is…” She paused, and I realized who she was talking about.
“You like York?”
“Yes.”
“Huh… does he like you?”
“I don’t know.”
“Interesting. Well, I can help you with that, but I need you to do me one little favor.”
“Certainly.”
“Tell me who locked my father up.”
She nodded. “Okay. What’s his name?”
“Aubrey Caine.”
“Sure, where should I reach you?”
I pushed my feet off the table and wrote down my cell number on her notepad. “This is my burner phone. Call me when you have the details.”
“And if I need you to help me in the meantime? Can I call you for help?”
“Why would you need help?” I asked, cocking my head to the side. Now that I looked at her, I could see the tension in her posture. “Is someone after you?”
“Yes… my husband. He’s not happy I pushed him out of the office. He has spies, people meaning me harm.”
“Would you mind him biting the bullet?”
Erin smiled, the evilness making me feel a whole hell of a lot better about our new alliance. “Not at all.”
