Without a word, she quickly got into her car looking at me before taking off. This was risky, she could rat me out causing Drew to move Ebony, and I’d lose her, but I had no option left.
EBONY
I heard people out in the office even though the door was closed. It wasn’t just the asshole here. I had to admit my thoughts had begun to turn negative. Why hadn’t Jett come for me yet? Was the asshole cop right? Had I just been another one of Jett’s floozies, and he’d cut his losses with me when I got myself arrested?
I sat down close to the bars. It was night outside so I could only see a tiny light coming from the window in the door leading to the office outside. Just as I was about to fall asleep against the cool, hard bars, I heard the door open, and heavy footsteps make their way down to me.
“Feeling dismissed yet?”
Did he have ESP?
“Why do you hate Jett so much?” I asked, looking up at him. His hair was no longer in place, rather it looked as if he’d been running his hands through it multiple times in frustration.
“Do you know about his past before he was Jett Black?”
I didn’t want to admit that I didn’t. I hated that this asshole knew Jett before me and that he knew more about his sordid past. Although if I thought about it, we hadn’t had a whole lot of time together for me to get the answers I sought.
“How do you know him?”
“We went to school together.”
“So?”
“We were friends for a long time until shit happened to him. Bad shit, and he turned into a monster instead of becoming a better person because of it. He was involved with shit no kid should ever see. But instead of doing what was right, he turned into… well, he turned into Jett.”
“And you hate him because of that?”
“Yeah… he’s a warlord, a criminal, and a gangster. I’m a cop, think about it. We go together about as well as oil and water.”
“That’s not why you hate him, though.”
He shifted on his feet watching me the entire time. I felt as if I was under a probe and he was digging around in my brain for answers. I finally looked away from him, hoping he would go away.
“Why did you do it?”
His question caught me off guard. I rolled my eyes. “Let me guess… your boss is riding your ass to charge me with something, and you’ve got nada.”
He bent down coming closer to my face, half of his face was lit up by the opened door up the hall. I could see the name on his badge.
“Cole.”
He seemed to pull back a little at the sound of his name, but instead of walking away, he cocked his head to the side.
“Where were you?”
I frowned, not understanding where he was going with this.
“You were missing for a year. Where did you go?”
How did he know about that? Had someone cared enough to report me missing?
“I was… getting better.”
“Rehab?”
“Something like that.”
“Let me guess… Jett helped you with it, and now you feel obligated to do his dirty work for him.”
