“He’s okay . . . for now.” Any emotion was absent from Sonny’s voice. “I bound and gagged him. He’s in another room so he won’t cause any trouble.”
“And the security guard stationed down here? Where is he?”
Amusement glimmered in his eyes. “That was me. I was the security guard.”
She tamped down her anger, knowing emotion would only get her in trouble and make her vulnerable. “Did you do something to Jason?”
The amusement in Sonny’s gaze turned into a full-on smile that spread slowly and purposefully across his face. “That’s not important.”
“It’s important to me.” Tension simmered in her voice.
“All you need to worry about right now is getting into those files. There’s something I need.”
Olive swung her head back and forth with disappointment. “How could you do this? I thought you were one of the good guys. Jason trusted you.”
“I don’t have time to explain this to you.” He said the words through gritted teeth. “Now just do what I say before I have to take drastic measures.”
Drastic measures?
Olive swallowed hard, knowing she needed to buy more time. There was no way she would hand that information over to him. Even if the specs were incomplete, she couldn’t risk it.
“You don’t want to do this,” she told him.
“I do. Now stop talking.”
“Do you even understand?—?”
“Stop talking!”
“But Sonny?—”
Before she could say anything else, he pulled the trigger, and a bullet charged through the air.
CHAPTER 49
Pain sliced Olive’s arm, and she reached for her bicep. The bullet had skimmed the skin there, cutting through her suit jacket and leaving a bloody outline on the gray fabric.
“Next time, I won’t miss,” Sonny growled. “Now get moving.”
She raised her hand in the air in false surrender. “It’s not as easy as you think to access these files.”
“I know how this works.” He grabbed her uninjured arm and shoved her toward the computer. “Now sit.”
He left her little choice but to lower herself into the chair.
Olive’s hands trembled as she pulled her hand away from her bullet wound and reached for the keyboard.
Red covered her fingers.
She hadn’t lost so much blood that she was in dire trouble. But this situation was still precarious.
She would pretend to get this information for Sonny. But she’d rather die than give him anything.
Then again, if Olive died, who would stop Sonny?
Maybe Jason. Unless something had happened to him.
Her thoughts raced. Where was he? What if Adriana had done something?
