“That’s because you didn’t tell anyone you were in the hospital.”
“Does that mean you would have brought me some?”
“Nope.”
“Ouch. You know, that hurts, man. I have feelings, too.”
I flipped off comms so I didn’t have to hear him complain anymore and got in my car. Now I had to get to the cafe to get her a damn cup of coffee that I knew she wasn’t going to drink. In the three days we’d been at the resort, she’d eaten approximately one meal a day. Her appetite just hadn’t returned yet. I knew it hadn’t come roaring back yet. She just wanted to get rid of me. And I obliged her.
I was well aware that I was being overbearing. Hell, I was practically sitting on top of her to get her to rest. She didn’t think she needed it, but I damn well knew when her head hit the pillow and she immediately fell asleep that her body was still in recovery mode. But I’d let her think this one time that she’d won. I wasn’t going to be an asshole about it and take that away from her. She was safe, and that was all that mattered.
I dialed IRIS, checking in with him for the second time since leaving the cabin. He answered on the second ring with a huge sigh.
“Yeah?”
“How is she?”
“She’s sneaking around outside.”
“What?”
“You heard me. She’s tiptoeing around cabins and looking inside.”
“For what reason?”
“How the hell should I know? Would you like me to go ask her?”
“No, don’t bother her.”
Why the hell would she peek into other cabins? That was so unlike her. Wasn’t it? Maybe I didn’t know her as well as I thought.
“Oh, wait a minute. She seems really interested in this one cabin.”
“Who’s is it?”
“Uh…the couple from Pasadena.”
Pasadena. “Aren’t those people usually pretty strait-laced?”
“How the hell should I know? Why do you keep asking me questions I don’t know the answers to?”
“What is she doing now?”
“Uh…still looking in the cabin. Huh. This is interesting.”
“What? What is it?” I didn’t like the sound of whatever was going on.
“Jane just arrived. She just scared Isla…caught her peeking. And now she’s rushing over. Oh, now she’s crouching down under the window with her.”
“What the fuck are they doing?”
“Again, I don’t know. Okay, now they’re both looking through the window. Now they’re tilting their heads to the right and?—”
He stopped so suddenly that I almost swerved off the road for fear that something happened. “What? What is it? Talk to me, IRIS!”
“I think…I think they might be watching someone have sex.”
“What?”
