“You’re welcome. I’ll just …” I point over my shoulder and back out of the room.

A few minutes later, he comes out smelling way better than anyone should be allowed to.

“It’s all yours.” He nods behind him.

As I step around him, he grabs my arm gently. “I’m going to head back to my room. Text me if you want to talk after your shower.”

When I don’t say anything, he releases me and steps toward the door. I watch as his fingers graze the doorknob. I can’t let him leave.

“Please stay.”

Chapter Eleven

Kelsie

“I’ve never tried the hot fudge sundaes back in Iowa,” I whisper to the dark, breaking the silence of the past several hours.

After I finished my shower, he pulled me against his chest, under the safety of the covers. We’ve been quiet ever since.

He sighs. “You’re not going to tell me, are you?”

“If you want to know something about me, why don’t you have your investigator friends figure it out?”

He rolls me onto my back, and my heart begins to pick up speed. I hate it when they hover… the intensity of his gaze shatters the intrusive thought just as quickly as it begins. He has a way of holding me present.

“I want to know. Now.”

“Kiss me,” I hear myself say.

I wasn’t trying to distract him, but it’s a nice coincidence that it does. His gaze drops to my lips at the same time he presses his groin against my thigh. My leg raises a fraction, rubbing againsthim, my heart pattering anxiously for his reaction … and mine. His tongue rakes over his teeth, his lip curling in a hungry snarl right before his mouth descends on mine.

My stomach flips clean over itself.

An explosion happens deep in my soul, casting both our shadows into the light. His hands are everywhere on me, hot and rough and sure. It’s glorious.

“We should stop,” he groans into my mouth.

“No,” I cry.

“I’m not who you think I am.”

“I don’t care who you are.” This might be my only chance to know what ‘normal’ feels like.

He grabs both of my hands, holding them on each side of my head. Patiently, he waits for me to still, his eyes never leaving mine.

“I’m working undercover.”

I blink up at him.

“Little shadow, when the club finds out, they won’t let me stay. This isn’t going to be easy for us.”

I sit up, pushing him away. “Are you targeting someone in the club?”

“Someone from the SoCal Chapter. He’s a trafficker, Kelsie.”

“Okay, well then, they’ll understand.”

He shakes his head, backing off the bed. “They won’t.”
