Jody removed his legs from the table. “He damn sure has better control of his. I’m older than you, and all of us have gifts. Greer won’t acknowledge any of his family have gifts, but we know they do. We can feel the power coming from them. Don’t underestimate them. We’ve managed to keep the peace between that side of our family tree by controlling our gifts. The Porters and the Colemans have to work together to keep our secrets safe. Silas and Greer, as much as they disliked each other, put their differences aside for the best interest of our families.”

Fynn made a face. “You want me to be friends with Logan?”

Jody turned as serious as Silas. “Some of your gifts are earth-based, like mine. Logan has to have at least one earth-based one, too. Like magnets when in various directions, they can repel each other. I feel his energy when I’m near Logan. I’m older and more experienced, so I can counter the energy by moving my position when I’m around him. You have to learn how to react to your gift, not let it control you.”

At his explanation, Fynn seemed to be thinking over what he had said. “I didn’t think about it that way.”

“We’re all willing to help you, Fynn. We all love you. To be honest, I don’t know how well I would have managed having as many gifts piled on me like you do. I have trouble managing mine. I do keep one thing in my mind always, though—when I make a mistake, not only could I pay the price, but someone else in our family might. Our gifts come with a price. We lost Leah much too young because of her gifts. We don’t want to lose you, too.”

Fynn nodded. “May I go upstairs now?”

“Yes,” Silas allowed him.

Jody and Silas stared at each other as Fynn went up the steps. Jody spoke only once he heard Fynn’s door closing.

“You think he will listen to us?”

Silas’ lips twisted into a half-smile. “Did you listen to my warnings?”

Jody chuckled. “No. But, to be fair, I’ve given you the least amount of trouble compared to the rest of us.”

Silas made a scoffing sound. “So far. I heard Joel asked Sophie out. Are you going to behave?”

Jody gave him an innocent look. “Absolutely.”

Chapter Twenty-Two

Spotting the man he was looking for, Jody pulled his truck up next to Joel’s, then pressed a button to roll his window down and motioned for the deputy to do the same.

Joel rested his arm on the window edge once it was down. “What’s up, Jody?”

“Nothing much,” he answered cordially. “What are you up to? Casing the park?”

“Nope, just hiding out from Greer until I get off shift. I can’t be near him with a loaded gun.”

“He does tend to get on people’s nerves,” Jody agreed.

“What are you doing out so early?”

“Wanted to have a chat with you.”

Joel frowned. “About what?”

Jody dropped his cordial attitude. “I heard you asked Sophie to the music festival.”

“I did.” Joel gave him a knowing smirk. “What’s wrong? I beat you to the punch?”

“She’s not exactly your type, is she?”

“She’s not exactly yours, either.”

“She’s exactly my type. I want you to cancel the date.”

“Why in the fuck should I do that?”

“Because I’m asking you to.”

“Yeah. Sorry, but not sorry. I’m looking forward to it.”
