The enemy’s main ship fired again, but she was ready. This time she banked her ship to avoid the beams and inspiration struck. She manually drew over one of the beams and had the ship’s system track back to its starting coordinates. “You can’t see me, can you? You assholes.” Setting her course to return to the surface of Mora Five, she marked the enemy ship’s heading and speed. “And you still think I can’t see you.”
She opened her comms. “Taeger? This is Cassie.”
His response came immediately. “What the fuck are you still doing here? Get out of here!”
“Do you have the enemy ship on your radar?”
“If you mean sensors, then no. We are fighting blind.”
“Not anymore. Incoming coordinates.”
There was a moment of silence as she sent the message. She could practically hear the gears in his head grinding the information she’d just sent. “How did you get this?”
She glanced at her sparkling hand as she dodged another cluster of the black search beams. “It’s a long story. I’m on my way to you.”
“No. They must not obtain the Black Star. Go, Cassie. Get the fuck out of here.”
Glancing at her sensors, she answered him. “Descending now. I’ll be in the landing bay in two minutes. Be ready.”
“No! I forbid—”
She cut off the comm with a grin, kept the enemy in her visuals as long as she could, and went back to Mora Five to stop the man—no, the alien—she loved from being very honorable. Very noble. And very dead.
Chapter Thirteen
Heart pounding like his entire body was about to explode, Taeger shoved the last few stragglers onto an evacuation craft. and ordered Greig to close the door and get off the planet.
Cassie’s coordinates had been dead on and the last attack he’d launched had taken down one of the Dark Ones’ support ships. Which was a miracle in and of itself. How had Cassie known the exact coordinates of that ship? The Dark Ones’ stealth tech was legend, even among his own people.
They’d taken their shot, and now it was time to run. “Get out of here Greig. Get those people to Earth.”
“Not without you. Get on.”
“Cassie is coming back for me.”
“What?” Grieg shook his head, then looked to the entrance to their once secret subterranean base, their home for centuries. It was crumbling under the force of the Dark Ones’ attacks. Cracks formed in the rock above their heads as a constant barrage of dust and smaller pebbles fell on them like rain in spring.
Taeger watched in awe—and his heart stopped hurting—the moment the small craft zoomed into the landing area way too fast and used a side wall of the cavern to bank the craft and absorb some of her speed. The maneuver was brilliant, if a bit aggressive.
“She’s insane.” Greig complained, grinning.
“She’s mine.” Taeger wanted to spank her, kiss her, fuck her, and scream at her all at once and she wasn’t even on the ground yet. He looked away from her ship and met Greig’s gaze. “Go. Get the fuck out of here. If I don’t make it, go directly to King Dagan of the Caldorians on Earth and ask to speak to Falden Corshival. He’s the one who sent out the call. He’s been guarding Sevron and Torrin, heirs to the First House of Lumeria.” He clasped hands with Greig as his friend agreed to do what was asked of him.
“Prince Ion should meet the other royals. He will need them.”
“We all will.”
Greig stepped back with a salute and closed the ship’s door. The moment that was done, Taeger took off at a sprint for Cassie’s ship. She hadn’t landed. Instead, she hovered just low enough for him to leap through the now open door.
He moved quickly to the co-pilot’s seat and buckled himself in.
“About time. I thought you two were going to need to get a room over there.”
“Why would we need another room? We are evacuating the planet.”
Cassie burst out laughing as she made sure the door was closed and waited, watching to ensure Greig’s ship made it out of the area before flying out of the now empty base.
“Thank you.” The relief he felt watching Greig shoot off into the atmosphere was real and somehow, she had anticipated his need to make sure the last of his people were safe.
