“Oh, gosh, sorry,” I manage to stammer out.
“Always running into me, aren’t you?” He lets out a little laugh and gives me a wink. “I mean, I know my body is hard to resist—” He plucks the can from my hand and sets it on a table. “But I think I’ve made it clear you just have to say the word, and it’s yours.”
My whole body flares with heat, and I quickly turn around. I head back to my shelf and shake off the feelings I’m having. We are at a fucking elementary school.
“Since it’s just us, you want to play a game?” I ask, trying to fill the silence.
“A game?”
“Yes, a game. Let’s have a little fun.” I look over my shoulder to where he has moved to fill a shelf with bags of instant rice.
“What did you have in mind?”
“Truth or dare.”
A devious smile plays across his face.
“PG version of course,” I clarify because of where we are and I don’t need him getting any ideas. “Oh and there are rules.”
“I expected there would be.”
“Ha ha ha,” I tease. “The rules are simple: it must stay PG, you must tell the truth, and no backing out of the dares.”
“Deal, I’m in. You ask me first,” he says.
I smile and turn back around to add a few more cans to the shelf in front of me. “Truth or dare?”
“Truth.”
“What’s your biggest fear?”
Logan doesn’t skip a beat and answers immediately. “Turning into my dad.”
“What do you mean?” The hard truth of his answer strikes my heart like a dagger. I know I don’t have the whole storythere, but I can’t imagine having the type of relationship Logan and his dad have with one of my parents. It breaks my heart.
“Yeah, I try so hard to be nothing like him and it terrifies me that his choices might actually be hereditary.”
I look back at him. “You know by saying that out loud, it means you are already better than he is, right?”
He offers me a small smile. “It’s your turn. Truth or dare?”
“Truth.”
“Who is your favorite person? And you can’t say me." He throws me a wink.
“That’s tough. I have so many favorite people, but if I had to pick one I’d pick my big sister, Olive. I really look up to her. She loves her people so fiercely and I’ve always thought she was really cool. Hell, without her I wouldn’t be here right now.”
“What do you mean?”
“I originally was supposed to be at a pediatric hospital. But at the last minute, Olive swooped in and saved the day like she always does. I was really lucky Beth and her are friends and Pecan Grove didn’t already have a student therapist.”
“Well, if shes the reason your here, then she sounds like one of my favorite people too.”
I sit stunned for a minute. For someone who is supposed to be nothing more than casual sex, he sure knows how to make my heart skip a beat. “Alright, it’s your turn. Truth or dare?”
“Truth.” He turns back to his shelf and continues to work.
“What’s your favorite thing about me?”
