"Sweet dreams, Kitty," I murmured softly, and his lips tilted up in a smile.
"Sweet dreams, Walker."
Caelan fell asleep almost instantly, but it took me a while to shut down my thoughts and drift off. The last thought I had before sleep took me was that I was not leaving Caelan alone for at least a week. Hopefully, he wouldn't grow sick of me.
Ro'Shassz
All's well that ends well, right? Caelan was back home safe, and the vampire bastard's soul was nicely burning in the Chasm—I checked. Caelan and Walker were also very much in love, which meant my mission was successful.
I wasn't sure if I’d actually played a role in getting them together except getting themheretogether, but it didn't matter because I was still going to take full credit for it. I deserved it, since I'd practically signed up for a lifetime of third-wheeling by bringing them together. I should be given an award for my selflessness.
Caelan mumbled in his sleep, and I rested my head over his; whether to bother him or comfort him was anyone's guess. I had a feeling when these two woke up, I would not want to be here, so I was going to soak up the few moments of peace I had.
Step Twenty-Three: Enjoy the moment of peace and then get the hell out of dodge before they 'got their freak on' like Nox would say.
Twenty-Four
Caelan
Who knew getting to rip your worst enemy's head off his shoulders resulted in the best sleep of your life? I didn't think I'd ever slept this well.
Stretching my arms above my head and dislodging a familiar scaly member of our weird little family in the process, I blinked my eyes open, taking a moment to soak in the utter contentment. Walker was wrapped around me like a barnacle, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
"And I think that's my cue to leave," Ro declared.
"Hang on!" I said, pressing my fingers against his side to stop him.
"What?" he asked, and I smiled.
"I wanted to thank you," I said, and he hissed softly.
"You already did that," he said, and I shook my head.
"Not for that. I mean, yes, I'm thankful you came to my rescue, but I wanted to thank you for what you did for us. I don't think we would be together right now if it wasn't for you," I said sincerely, and Ro'Shassz smacked his tail into my face.
"I didn't do anything. I'm leaving now," he said, and then disappeared. I grinned. I didn't think it was possible to embarrass Ro'Shassz. Time to mark another thing off my bucket list.
"What are you thinking about?" Walker asked, and I glanced down at him, a smile spreading on my lips as I met his amber gaze.
"Hi," I murmured. "I was just thinking Ro looks cute when he's embarrassed."
"How did you manage to embarrass him?" Walker asked in surprise, and I chuckled.
"I thanked him for playing matchmaker and helping us get together," I said, and Walker grinned.
"Yep. That should do it."
I felt a sudden twisting feeling in my stomach, and I sucked in a breath, stunned. It took me a minute to realize what the pain was, and when I did, my eyes widened.
"What is it?" Walker asked, worry clear in his voice.
"Walker...I think-I think I'm hungry," I said.
His eyes lit up with excitement and he sat up quickly, grabbing my hands in his. "Oh my God! Really? Wait, does that mean our bond is complete? Why didn't we feel anything?"
"I don't know. Could it have happened when we were asleep?" I asked.
"Maybe. Dad said it can happen anytime. But who cares? You can eat! Oh, I got samosas and tikkis. Let me heat them up!"
