The intensity of it felt so good, I was shaking, my breath coming in short bursts as I clung to the bed. He didn't let up, pounding hard and rubbing me until I felt myself gush over his cock.

Ryden felt me tighten around him and thrust in deep.

The orgasm ripped through me, making me shake under him.

I screamed into the bed, letting it muffle my sounds, and forced myself as far down on Ryden's shaft as possible while I clenched around him.

His muscles tightened, and I felt the vibrations of his groan through my back as he came, spurting inside me. Wetness trickled over my thighs, but I didn't care, especially when he curled around me, stroking my hair out of my face and kissing my neck and shoulders.

Maybe I wasn’t quite ready to be his mate, but I wanted to be someone for him to lean on, too.

His breathing was still ragged and heavy, his cock still buried inside me as he held me tight.

"I will always be around," he said, pulling me against his chest. "I will always be yours when you need me."

He was gonewhen I woke up, but I still stretched luxuriously, grinning to myself.

Then I rolled over and found a flower on the pillow.

I picked it up, twisting it between my fingers. The white petals practically glowed in the morning light.

There was a part of me that had honestly expected Ryden to flick his fingers in dismissal as soon as he’d gotten what he wanted out of me.

Waking up to a romantic gesture just made me even more cheerful as I washed and dressed for temple duties.

Kadin was already waiting for me when I crossed over the sky bridge.

“We’re to bury the lost pack’s remains first,” she said. “And Yasemin wants to see if you can raise their spirits and speak to them.”

For the first time that morning, my good mood tilted a little to the side.

Not only from the fear that I wouldn’t be able to do it again—although that was ridiculous, since I’d managed to call up their newly-dead spirits in their village —but fear of what the dead would say.

Did they prefer to be left in peace? Was I disrupting their eternal rest when I pulled them back from the grave?

We went into the necropolis together, lighting oil lamps as we went. A new vault was waiting for this pack, which would be given to the orphaned pups to visit when they were of age, but it still needed to be prepared.

I swept out the dust from all the dark corners while Kadin wiped the shelves, altar, and brazier down.

When we were done, we put the jar on a shelf, and then I lit the moon lantern for them and hung it in its place of honor.

Kadin sat down cross-legged next to the altar. “It’s all you now.”

I swallowed, and put my hands on the altar, feeling for the cold fire.

Hours passed.

I realized at one point that Kadin had fallen asleep, her head lolling onto her shoulder and her mouth open.

It had to be close to sundown by now, and I hadn’t managed to summon anything.

Fear nipped at me. Was it because I’d already called their spirits back once?

No... I’d managed to sort of summon Trion’s spirit twice. But I couldn’t conjure so much as a lick of smoke from these wolves.
