“Do you know who could have sent this to you?” He put the paper down.

“No. I just turned the envelope in to get tested for fingerprints.”

“Do you know what it means?” Beau picked up his coffee mug.

Sammy picked her’s up as well and blew at the steaming liquid, cooling it off before taking a sip. She looked at the note on her desk. “The only thing that sticks out to me is ‘emerald eyes’ and the clues about the house. I know you think I should let the department and attorneys do their jobs with Calista, but—.”

“Calista’s eyes were green. Look, I know this is important to you. Even I have to admit, this note or clue, whatever it is, is odd; especially since it was sent directly to you . . .”

“The missing girl I’m looking at, her eyes were green too. That’s two. House in the woods?” Sammy stood up and began pacing around the office. “House in the woods . . .” She sat down at her desk and opened the drawer that contained files. She fingered the tops of the files until she found the one she was looking for. The one marked Duke, James.

Sammy opened the file and skimmed through the pages. She found a picture of a house and pointed at it. “There! James Duke’s house. It’s in the woods. Maybe that’s where the emerald eyes lie.” She found the page with the address and wrote it down on a sticky note. She put everything back in the file and threw it back in the drawer.

“I’ve got to go. Tell Lieutenant I had an emergency and had to leave. I love you.” Sammy pecked Beau on the cheek. She grabbed her purse out of her desk and shoved the letter and sticky note inside before tossing it over her shoulder.

Beau shook his head and smiled as he watched his favorite person practically run out the door.
