“Do it.” Willa was sliding the dildo in and out more and more rapidly as Jackson’s manipulations on her clit sped up and his body moved faster and faster behind her. Within minutes, Willa felt her orgasm beginning and she moaned, “I’m going to come now. Come with me.”

Willa’s body shook from head to toe with her release, and Jackson had to hold her with both hands firmly grasping her hips. He shoved into her two more times and suddenly let out a war cry as his own release exploded from him. He smashed his eyes closed and threw back his head, hollering.

Exhausted and satisfied, they both landed in a heap onto the bed. Jackson kissed her and then excused himself to get rid of the condom and clean up. When he returned, he snuggled against her, wrapping her into a tight embrace.

“That was pretty amazing,” Willa murmured into Jackson’s neck.

“You make me so happy.” He kissed he and held her close to his warm chest. Their hearts seemed to synchronize their beats.

“Jackson?” she asked sleepily.

“Hmm?”

“I love you.”

“Good.”

Chapter 9

The day before Casey’s party, Willa was in the middle of writing when she thought of a question she wanted to ask Jackson about computers. She remembered he’d said he needed to go home that morning, but she was deeply involved in her writing and couldn’t remember anything about why he couldn’t stick around at her house. She decided to pop over and ask him in person rather than calling him. Any excuse to see the man was a good one, she reasoned, and she wanted to write about the subject correctly. It was certainly his area of expertise.

As she reached the front door, a strange man opened it and locked it behind him. He turned to face her, as surprised to see her as she was to see him.

At roughly the same height as Jackson, this man was just as handsome in a completely different way. He had that California surfer boy appearance about him with extremely broad shoulders, bulging biceps, narrow hips and thick blond hair. Green-eyed with a sexy scruff, he looked like he could take care of himself by breaking you in half—or wooing you to his bed just as easily.

Willa scolded herself for ogling him. It was terribly uncomfortable to be attracted to someone else while standing on her boyfriend’s doorstep. Or anyway, she was attracted to him, until he started speaking.

Scowling at her suspiciously, the man said, “So, you must be the famous Willa who has stolen Jackson’s heart and apparently his sense of reason as well. I recognize you from your picture.”

Willa stepped back and blinked. “Excuse me?” She assumed he must have seen her photo on one of her books and wasn’t sure she liked the sudden gleam of interest in his eyes.Maybe this asshole isn’t all that attractive after all.“Who are you?” she demanded. “I was just coming to ask Jackson a question.”

“Casey Melrose. Jackson’sbestfriend.”

Great. This jerk is the one Jackson is proposing as a possible third? Forget it.“Pardon me. It’s… nice (no it isn’t) to meet you finally, but I need to talk to Jackson. Can you let me by, please?”

“He’s not here.”

Willa raised her eyebrows at that news. “Then what are you doing here?”

“I was dropping off a painting he’s been waiting for that he wanted to hang in his dining room. Jackson was here, but he had to rush off as soon as I arrived. Dentist appointment. I hung the picture, and now I’m leaving too. But I’m glad I ran into you because this will give us a chance to have a little chat. I was thinking about coming over to your place and introducing myself actually.” Casey gave her a penetrating look. “I’m sure you realize he’s enormously wealthy, and I know he’s completely hung up on you. Since he’s my best friend, I want to make sure you’re in this with honest intentions, and you’re not a gold digger.”

Willa glared at Casey. “How dare you? You know nothing about me, and you assume I want Jackson for hismoney? Don’t you realize there’s so much more to the man than that? He’s brilliant and kind and the sexiest man alive.” She hadn’t meant to admit that last part, and she suddenly blushed a deep pink. “You think so little of your best friend that you assume I see only dollar signs? I don’t want—orneed—his money, and I’m definitely in it for the long haul with Jackson. I’m in love with him, and if you can’t handle that, then fuck you!”

Willa spun around and stomped away but only got a few steps when Casey burst out laughing and called after her in a light voice: “Atta girl, Willa. You pass inspection!”

Still supremely irritated, she faced him again and huffed, “I don’t need your approval.”

“Well, you have it anyway. Good for you.” He beamed at her. “I’m delighted to hear you stand up for him. He’s a very special guy and I never want to see him get hurt.”

Baffled at Casey’s mood swings, Willa stared at him and didn’t know what to think. She didn’t like being manipulated, or forced into anger. And she wasn’t sure she could completely trust that Casey was just “testing” her, anyway. Angrily she stepped forward and blurted out, “One more thing, buster. If you are so concerned about this man—who loves you—then you better not be trying to undermine a relationship that’s important to him. He loves me too!”

“Loves me?” Casey looked quizzical and taken aback.

“A figure of speech,” she muttered, not looking at him.Maybe.

Casey narrowed his eyes again, cocking his head thoughtfully. “I think we’re off to a bad start. I’m sorry. I’m not… the best with people sometimes. And Jackson is really important to me.”

“Why do you think you need to look out for him? He’s a grown man.”
