I closed my eyes and exhaled at that. Quickly, I reopened them to find her still staring at me. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
I nodded. “I’m just a bit tired.”
She smiled at that. “You did wake me really late, and then keep me awake well into the morning.”
And I knew exactly how I’d accomplished that feat which only pissed me off more that I couldn’t remember any of it. So many nights, I’d laid in bed reliving every moment with her, especially those which involved her coming on my tongue, hand,or cock. I could’ve used a few new memories to torture myself with.
Not sure how to answer her, or even whether she expected a response or not, I turned my attention to her mantle which included the same photograph of her and Blair. The temperature in the room dropped an additional ten degrees, and my heart began racing wildly once more.
There’d been a reason I’d banished her from my life, and now all the hard work I put in to stay gone had been for nothing. I was pissed at myself. As I began to pace, I only stopped when I watched her bend down to put on her shoes.
“Are you going somewhere?” I asked, which was comical as I was the one who needed to leave and quickly, yet I couldn’t force my feet to move.
“In a little while. I have to pick Lug Nut up from the veterinarian’s office.”
Well, that explained the mystery of the missing canine. If only, I could get other answers just as easily. There was no simple way to ask her whether we’d used protection or not, so I decided to drop it for the moment.
“I was going to make myself a cup of coffee. Do you want to join me?”
Her question interrupted my thoughts. “Umm, sure. I like mine– ”
Brynn had gotten up by this time, and as I was about to tell her my preference, she placed her dainty hand on my arm and smiled up at me. “I know how you like it.”
And judging by how exhausted I was, I’m sure that didn’t just pertain to coffee. She was my secretary, so I knew she mostly meant the coffee. “That’s true.”
“Just because you haven’t been in the office, it doesn’t mean I don’t remember what you like,” she said as she began to walk toward the kitchen.
At the mention of the office, I did remember that I’d planned to fire her. “Fuck!”
“What?” She called out from the other room.
I couldn’t come over here and fuck her raw, then grab a cup of coffee and verbally fire her before hitting the road. I shook my head. This was a clusterfuck of a situation. “Nothing,” I responded, then walked to her window. I pulled the curtain open and was at least relieved when I saw my sports car parked on the curb. Taking a deep breath, I walked to the kitchen.

Once Adrian left my house, I called the emergency vet to once again check on my boy before I went to go pick him up. That damn dog. This had been the most expensive holiday ever and I hadn’t even taken a trip.
The drive over seemed to take forever, even though there was practically no traffic. My stomach was still in a big knot when I walked in the door. As soon as the receptionist saw me, she smiled. “I know who you want to see,” she said. “Let me tell the doctor you are here.”
After a brief moment away, she returned. “I have to tell you, Lug Nut is just the sweetest and goodest boy. Those of us who were here last night fell ever so slightly in love with him.”
I felt the knot in my stomach ease up a bit. “Thank you. I fell in love, too, the minute I saw him.”
A side door opened and the doctor appeared. “Ms. Davis? Are you ready for your reunion?”
With a nod, I followed him down a short hallway into an exam room. It was a different room than the one I had been put in when I rushed the dog here one day ago. As soon as I entered the room, another door opened and my sweet boy walked through. He was a little slow and wobbly on his feet, buthe was extremely happy to see me. His entire back end wagged as he whined and strained trying to get to me.
Crouching down, I opened my arms and he trotted over, nearly knocking me onto the floor with kisses. I felt tears prick the backs of my eyelids while I hugged his neck. “I missed you too, bud. I don’t think I need to ask if you are ready to go home.”
After clipping on his leash, I checked out at the front desk, trying not to cringe when I got the final bill. Lord almighty. If Adrian didn’t pay me as well as he did, I would have been in some serious financial straits.
Discharge instructions in hand, I got the dog settled in the back seat of the car and headed toward one of his favorite places. He would get two treats today: an egg biscuit and a pup cup. I was so damn happy to have him back and on the road to recovery that I wanted to spoil him just a bit.
Once he had gotten his fill, Lug Nut settled in the back seat. In no time he was softly snoring while I drove home. One last disruption of getting into the house and he made a beeline for his bed, climbing in and sighing heavily after he got comfortable.
“Life is rough, isn’t it?” I said, shaking my head. The house just wasn’t the same without him here.
“Things would have been very different if youhadbeen home last night, wouldn’t they, boy?”
