“How in the hell did these get out?” I yelled. “We buried these years ago.”
“I don’t know ma’am.” Julia’s voice cracked. “The senator has called for Mr. Pennington several times, but we can’t locate him. He’s very unhappy.”
“I’ll go look for Mr. Pennington.” I rushed for the door, not bothering to look back. “If the senator calls back, forward his call to me. I’ll take care of it.”
“I tried to earlier and he hung up,” Julia said.
“Well, try again!” I was in the elevator before I could make out what Julia yelled next. The elevator doors opened to a dark room. Mr. Pennington was usually sitting at his desk in the room straight ahead at this hour, but it was empty.
“Mr. Pennington, are you here?” I called out, but no one answered. I checked every room and found no sign of him. Nothing looked out of place or suspicious. I tried calling his numbers myself, but same as Julia, I got no answer. I tried Robbie next, but he didn’t answer either. We were in the middle of a crisis and both Pennington men disappeared.
“Great.”
