“Close, it’s Sunday morning. Do you remember what happened?” Doctor Richman continues.

“There was an accident. A truck hit us.”

“Good. Do you remember anything after that?”

“Logan. He was there.” I look over at him. “You, you were there and told me not to worry.”

“Excellent. You’re right. That man sitting beside you is quite possibly the reason you and your daughter are still alive. The first responders on the scene said that he pulled that little girl from your burning car and went back for you.”

Logan’s face tenses and he bites his lip.

“He’s been giving my staff a hard time ever since you got here too.” He winks. “We’ve bent quite a few rules because of your boyfriend.”

“Rach, I’ll be back. I need to use the restroom.” Logan stands and lays Piper on the recliner, covering her back up with a blanket.

With him gone, Doctor Richman holds up a few fingers and asks me to count them. Satisfied with my answers, he then asks me to squeeze his fingers and wiggle my toes. “Looking good. I want to keep you for one more night. If all goes well, we’ll plan on releasing you tomorrow. Do you have any questions?”

“I think I’m okay for now.”

“Shannon will be back in shortly with some pain meds and a breakfast tray for you,” he says before stepping out.

Alone in the room with Piper sleeping soundly, anxiety creeps in, and I begin to cry. Pushing the button to sit myself up further in bed, I pull the pillow from behind my head and use it to muffle my sobs.

That’s how Logan finds me, practically doubled over, falling apart into a pillow.

Immediately he sits next to me on the side of the bed and wraps his arms around me. “It’s okay. Let it all out.”

“We could have died.” I hiccup.

“You didn’t. That’s all that matters. You and Piper are still alive.”

“Oh, God. I need to call Nana. I promised I’d meet her for church today.”

“Relax.” Logan puts his hands on my shoulders and eases me back against the bed. “Nana already knows. I had Rhys go to her house to tell her in person and bring her here. She stayed most of the night until I finally convinced her to go home and get some rest. I’m sure she’ll be back soon. Your grandmother offered to take Piper, but I was worried that you’d want her here if you woke up.”

“Ah, so Nana knows, and now you know the sweet old lady you’ve befriended is my grandmother.” I give him a tiny smile, and he chuckles.

“Oh yeah. I’ve pieced it all together. Nana says we’ve got some explaining to do.”

“You stayed? You’ve been with her the whole time?”

“I wasn’t going to be anywhere else. Smitty’s got a broken nose to prove it. He tried to stop me from getting to you.” He shrugs.

“Can we not talk about him? My head hurts bad enough as it is.”

Logan huffs. “Fine by me. They did come by to check on you.”

“How? How were you there? You left the birthday party, and I was on my way home.”

He cracks half a smile. “Two words… Kitten formula.”

I’m sure there is a longer story there, but we’re interrupted by my nurse with the good medicine. She warns me before she even sticks it in my IV that I’ll probably end up back asleep in no time.

“Anyone ever told you that you are the most stubborn woman on the face of this earth?”
