“Does it really matter, Maureen. Help a guy out, would ya?”
“Is this about a girl? Tell me it’s about a lady friend. It is, isn’t it?”
“Maureen. I’m not giving you water cooler fodder. It’s a yes or no. Please.”
“Oh, you said please. Hm. What’s in it for me?”
“I can work tomorrow or Thursday for you.” I offer.
“Take Thursday and Friday, and you’ve got yourself a deal.”
“Fine. Thursday and Friday. You’ve got it. I’m emailing Cassel now.”
“Yeah yeah. You’re welcome.” And with that, Maureen hangs up.
With that out of the way, I send a text to Rachel and ask how she feels about a little adventure for our next date.
Rachel: Uhm. Adventure sounds...fun. Should I be worried about what you have up your sleeve?
Me: Not at all. You’re safe with me.
Rachel: Is that so? Hm. I guess I’ll have to trust you on this. What time are you thinking? I’m free anytime after nine am.
Me: I’ll pick you up at 11. Wear something comfortable.
Rachel: Got it. Hate to run, but I need to get back to work. I’ll talk to you tonight?
Me: Count on it, pretty girl.
I pocket my phone as dispatch radios with a call not far from where I’m at. I let them know I’m en route and take off.
By the time I clock out at 1600, I’m beat. Today was nonstop and a late call for suspicious activity at a local elementary school as all of us on edge and emotionally worn out.
People are fucking crazy. Carting an angry parent from their kid’s school when the principal refused to let the kid go home with his estranged father and said father started making threats? Yeah, that’s not my idea of fun. And one more reason why I’m glad I don’t have kids of my own.
No child, in elementary school, none the less, should have to be afraid to go to school. A few of the little ones that were in close proximity when the dude snapped were pretty shaken up. The look of terror on their faces is one I’ll never get used to.
I’ve seen it before. In a war-torn country, you almost expect it though their faces still haunt me.
All I can do is pray like hell the asshole dad doesn’t come back and carry out his threatsandthat judge will take his threats serious enough to get the guy help before he does something stupid.
The text waiting from Rachel after I’ve gotten home and showered all the day’s bullshit away brightens my mood slightly as I lay back in bed.
Rachel: I know we’re going out Wednesday, but...Want to grab coffee tomorrow morning too? God, is that too forward of me? I was thinking; I’ll probably stop by Allegro’s if you wanted to join me. One rule, though, you let ME buy the coffee this time.
Me: I think that sounds great. Except, I don’t think you’re buying coffee. ;)
Her reply comes through immediately.
Rachel: Guess we’ll have to see about that.
Me: Yeah, we’ll see. You should know something about me Rachel, I always get my way.
Rachel: Oh, that’s funny. See, I can be quite persuasive, and you don’t scare me. In fact, I bet getting my way with you would be a whole lot of fun.
Fuck me. My cock hardens.
Me: Are you always so sassy?
