It’s nevera good sign when my phone starts ringing at midnight in the middle of the work week.
Especially when it's an unknown number.
Half awake, I swipe to answer the call and put the phone to my ear. “‘Lo.”
“C…Cody?”
It only takes one word for me to recognize that voice. “Stacey?”
“I need your help,” she hiccups out a sob.
At the sound of her voice, I quickly sit up and rub the sleep from my eyes. “Whoa. Hey, hey, hey. Take a breath for me. What’s going on? Where are you?”
Stacey sniffles then whispers, “the Marriott. Might be the Courtyard. Near the Tallahassee airport.”
Still in town. Interesting.
“Okay. Are you safe? Tell me what’s happening.”
“He…he hit me. I’m so sorry for calling. I didn’t know who else to call.”
My blood boils the minute what she’s said registers. “Who?” I’ll kill him. Whoever he is.
“W…W…Waylon.”
Yup. That bastard is as good as dead.
“Where’s he at now? Where’s Stefan and Taylor?”
“He told the guys they could take off for the night when we got here. I’m hiding in the bathroom. Cody, you have to help me. I can’t go back out there with him. I’ve never seen him like this and I’m terrified. I’m so sorry.”
I’m already up out of bed, dressed and searching for my keys. “I’m coming. I need to call one of the guys because I’m probably going to need their help to get you out of there. Are you okay if I hang up long enough to call him?”
If I can’t trust Stefan or Taylor to get her to safety then they need to look for a new job. Come to think of it, I don’t know why the fuck she didn’t call one of them in the first place.
Stacey hesitates. “I think so. But hurry.”
“Fuck it. Don’t hang up, Stace. I’m going to try and connect a three way call. Just sit tight.”
“O-o-okay.”
I pull the phone away from my ear long enough to hit the add call button and get Stefan on the line.
He answers, half asleep like I just was.
“Stefan. Stacey’s on the line with us. I need you to get her the fuck out of that hotel room and away from Waylon. I’m on my way.”
“What? Shit. You’re serious.” I can hear him fumbling around in the background.
“Oh, I’m dead serious. Do not let that son of a bitch leave either. Figure something out. You hear me?”
“On it boss,” he replies then says something to Taylor, who I’m guessing is sharing a room with him.
“Call me back if you need to. I’ll put you back online with me and Stacey. Got it?”
“Yup. Stacey. I’m coming down the hall now. Where are you at?”
“I locked myself inside the bathroom.”
