Both women at the other end of the call laugh.

“Okay, I’ll put her on. See you soon.”

Laughing, Kellan says, “Kiss Evan for me.”

“On his dick!” Rachel calls, her voice fading.

Chuckling, the other woman says, “Okay, my office hours are open. But first tell me, no bullshite, are you okay?”

“Yeah,” Kellan responds. “I am. It’s been a rough couple of weeks and there’s so much shit I have to tell you, but yeah, I’m getting there.”

“Right, I’ll accept that for now. As soon as I’m spawn-free, we’re having the fucking girls’ night to end all girls’ nights.”

“I’ll take that challenge. I need your help thinking through something. There’s something I’m missing. Something I can’t see.”

“Lemme get the boys. They’ll catch anything I miss.”

“Teddy, for now, just you.”

The woman’s breath catches. “Sommat wrong?”

“Yes. For right now, I need this just to be us. I’ll explain and it won’t be easy to hear. But I need this to stay between us for now.”

“Okay. You got my attention. Fire away.”

“I’ll catch you up on how I know all this when we have our girls’ night. For now, can you take some things on faith?”
