I made a face. “Only if you’re not her daughter. Anyway, she kept threatening to show up here so she could meet him, so finally I gave in and said I would ask. I honestly didn’t think he would say yes.”

“And why is that?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know. Doesn’t it feel too soon? It’s only been a few weeks.”

“I don’t think it’s too soon. You guys spend all of your time together.”

“Notallof our time. I spend time with you, too.”

“Not much.”

“This feels like an attack.”

Levi chuckled. “It’s not. I’m glad you’re happy.”

“But?” I knew he was holding something back.

“I just don’t want you to get too attached to this guy and then have him flake out on you.”

He wasn’t saying anything that I hadn’t worried about before. Still, I felt the need to defend Jax. “I don’t think he is. I have faith in him.”

“Then be happy.” Levi leaned in and pressed a kiss to my cheek. “Also, take copious notes. I want to hear all about dinner. Is your dad bringing Sherry too?”

“No. Apparently, they wanted it to be just them for this interrogation.”

“Oh, so that means nobody will be on their best behavior. Awesome. I’m kind of sorry I’m missing it.”

“I’m sure you’ll hear all the gory details … from both sides.”

“That’s what I’m counting on.”

“ARE YOU SURE THIS IS OKAY?”

Jax had settled on tailored black pants and a blue button-down shirt. He was convinced he needed a suit coat, though, even though I nixed that idea right away.

“It’s going to be fine,” I assured him as we got off the elevator in the hotel lobby. The restaurant was close enough to walk to. “Just be cool.”

“This is a big deal. I finally get to meet the moms … and the dad. I’m not sure which one I’m most nervous about.”

“The moms,” I answered without hesitation. I waved at the front desk staff as we skirted toward the door. “They’re going to grill you mercilessly.”

“They can’t be worse than my mom.”

“Your mom wasn’t interested in me in the least.”

“Yeah. Get used to that. She’s not interested in me either.”

My heart spasmed. “I’m interested in you.”

He took my hand in his and gave it a squeeze. “Then I’m a happy man.”

We were still grinning at each other like morons when we hit the sidewalk. Unfortunately, our happiness took a detour when we practically ran into Tammy, who was staring at her phone screen and in the way.

“Oh, isn’t this sweet?” she drawled as she glanced between us. “Going out for a night on the town? Again?”

“We’re going to dinner,” Jax replied. “I finally get to meet Daisy’s famous mothers, and I can’t wait.”

The sneer that had been on Tammy’s face disappeared in an instant. “You’re going to meet her mothers? I thought this was just a fling.”
