“I’m sure it will be fine for five minutes.” Jax was just as bland as I had been. “I think we need to have a discussion.”

“The three of us?” I repeated. I couldn’t get over that development.

“That’s what I said.”

I glanced at Levi. He looked as confused as I felt. “Okay. Sure. Let’s go to your office.” My legs were a bit shaky when I stood. “Let’s go right now.”

“Great.” Jax turned on his heel and stalked back in the direction he’d come from.

Levi and I dragged our feet as we followed.

“Close the door,” Jax instructed when we were in his office.

I held back a sigh as I sank into one of the chairs. Levi was on full alert but didn’t say anything.

“It’s come to my attention that there’s some wild gossip flying around the hotel today,” Jax started.

“I’m sure we don’t know anything about that,” Levi lied.

“You don’t know about the rumor that a guy dressed as a butler at last night’s party stripped Daisy naked and made her perform a cheerleading routine with a flaming baton?”

I blinked twice. “Seriously?” I glared at Levi. “What the hell? You know I have traumatic memories about the time I tried to learn to twirl a baton.”

Levi sent me an apologetic smile. “I thought you already knew about that one. Also, I love the memories of you and the baton. You were so cute in your little leotard.”

I made a face. “This means war. I hope you know that.”

“Don’t you think the panty sniffing rumor was bad enough?” Jax challenged. “I mean … that’s going to hurt his street cred.”

“Actually, I have mad street cred no matter what,” Levi said. “I’ll survive that rumor … although I might have nightmares.”

“Well, I don’t want the rumors.” Jax was firm. “If the others see you guys playing your little games, there’s nothing to stop them from wanting to play the same games.”

“They’re far too mature for these games,” I replied.

“Listen, I don’t know what you’re doing, or why you’re doing it, but I want it to stop.” There was no give to Jax’s tone. “Do you understand?”

“We’ve got it,” I replied on a sigh. I moved to stand. “If that’s all, we’ll get back to work.” I was embarrassed, and not because of the rumors. We were acting like children in a professional setting. We were both too mature for that.

“Actually, I’m done with Levi,” Jax replied. “I need you to stay for a moment, Daisy.”

Panic licked my heart and sent it into overdrive. Was he going to fire me over this? That didn’t seem fair. It wasn’t like I wanted Levi to lose his job but why was I the one on the hotseat and not my best friend?

Levi sent me a sidelong look. He was clearly wondering the same thing. “Um…”

“Go, Levi,” Jax ordered.

With one glance over his shoulder and an apologetic grimace, Levi was gone. He shut the door in his wake, which left me alone with Jax and cut off from the rest of the world.

“I think we should talk about last night,” Jax started.

Son of a witch. I had no idea he was just going to go for it, but obviously he was too straightforward to embrace the route I would’ve preferred, which was denial, denial, denial.

“Do we have to?” I dug deep for my cutest smile. “How about we just pretend it never happened?”

“That doesn’t seem to be working.”

“Levi’s just a busybody. He’ll move on to something else fairly quickly. I promise. He’s just mad because I won’t tell him anything.”
