His eyebrows arched. “We are about to fly. It is difficult when encumbered by clothing.”

“Okay,” she whispered.

He held out his hand, and she hesitated before she took it. “Put your backpack on. Let’s head to the balcony.”

He opened the massive sliding glass door. Her living room was a wall of glass, and she loved it at night. Everything had been fixed thanks to Logan. During the day, she normally kept the blinds closed.

Emily wrapped her arms around Logan’s waist, finding solace in the steady rhythm of his heartbeat as she pressed her ear against his chest. Their connection felt like an anchor amidst the swirling chaos of the night, grounding her in the reassuring familiarity of his presence.

As Logan’s arms encircled her, Emily felt a surge of warmth suffuse her being, his touch a comforting embrace that enveloped her in a sense of safety and protection. And then, in a breathtaking display of power and grace, his wings sprouted from his back, their majestic span unfurling to their full extent before he flapped them with a fluidity that spoke of centuries of mastery.

With a powerful thrust, they launched into the air, the rush of wind caressing their faces as they soared into the welcoming embrace of the night sky. The city below stretched out before them, a glittering tapestry of lights and shadows that danced in the moonlight.

They made their way toward the Dark Industries building, and the journey seemed to pass in the blink of an eye. With a soft thud, they landed gracefully on the rooftop, their arrival heralded by the quiet hum of the ventilation system.

She startled when Siro exited the shadows.

“Don’t be alarmed, Lass. I am here to help. I will distract the dark by the elevator while you procure your item.”

Her body remained taut, and Siro backed up a bit.

Logan rubbed her back. “Siro is my brother. You need not fear him.”

“He does look like you.” Though the other one had looked identical to Logan. But his revelation of magic meant she couldn’t trust what she saw. Maybe it was some kind of spell to trick her.

“He is not a brother by blood, but by clan. He is a brother in every sense of the word. My own brother died many years ago. Family is everything.”

She grunted and failed to keep the disgust from her voice. “Not mine. They are complete assholes.”

Logan tipped her chin up to meet his gaze. “Not all of them.”

The image formed in her mind. Her mother was watering her plants, and the yellow dress she wore seemed to attract the sunlight. “No. Not all of them. My mother was... everything family should be.”

The memory played in her mind of the day her mother had died, and her father had told her they had to move closer to her uncle. While she had cried, her father had made arrangements for her training.

Logan’s jaw tightened, and she knew she had shared thememory with him. Whatever their connection was, it was growing.

“Are you ready, Emily?”

“Yes. Let’s get this done.”

CHAPTER 11

He touched her shoulder slightly. “I know you planned to infiltrate using the ventilation ducts, but I will not fit in such an enclosed space. We will enter through the stairwell. I will shroud us from any humans we encounter, and Siro will take care of the dark by the elevator.”

She glanced at the door that led to the stairwell. “It will be locked. Let me get my pick set out.”

“There is no need. There isn’t a human-made lock I cannot disable.”

“Really?” she didn’t mean to imagine him stealing some of the world’s most expensive pieces of art.

He chuckled. “If you need such treasures, I will simply buy them for you.”

Her heart stuttered. “What?”

“Dragons amass great wealth.”

She grunted. “The immortality thing?”
