I put my hand on the metal screen between us. No. No, why was this happening?

“Why are you doing this?” I cried.

They didn’t answer. Lez took off his mask and Cassidy started to back out of the garage.

“Why are you doing this? Answer me!” I pounded my fists on the metal screen. I tried the doors but they were locked. I beat my hands on the glass then tried to kick.

Cassidy stopped the car outside the garage and got out to handcuff me. I spit in her face and she wiped it away with little emotion. She got back in the car and shut the door.

“Where are you taking me? Tell me!”

As she put the car into drive and took off at an alarming speed, she only said one word.

“Severfalls.”

PART 5

BURN, BABY, BURN

CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

No amount of screaming, cursing, begging, or crying had helped. Yet, I’d tried all four for half the drive. Eventually, I grew quiet when no response from either of them came, letting my thoughts race, wondering if I’d be able to get away before they got me inside Severfalls.

I sure as fuck wasn’t going to make it easy for them.

I stared at the back of Cassidy’s seat as the car jolted across a crack in the road. Why take me back? All for some revenge? No, it was something else. And I think I knew.

“Emery will kill you when he finds out what you did,” I said quietly, breaking the silence, hoping they would take the bait.

They said nothing at first, only looked at each other. Then I heard Cassidy release a short laugh. “He won’t find us.”

“You don’t know him like I do.”

“Yeah. I definitely don’t.”

“He’ll never stop. If I get hurt, he’ll hunt you down.”

I noticed her hands tightened on the wheel. “It doesn’t matter. As long as we finish what needs to be done tonight. I’ll deal with the aftermath.”

“So that’s it, isn't it?” I said. “You’re using me to get inside. You’re hoping they’ll let you in because you’ll have me and you can just walk right up to Kennedy and take your shot.”

“Here’s hoping,” Lez muttered.

Cassidy gave him a look. “Glad you’re finally getting it,” she said to me.

I shook my head as I glanced out the window, watching orange lights pass by. Watching the dark forest surrounding us. “You have no idea what you are getting into.”

“I have some idea, and that’s enough,” she replied. “The others will either follow or they won’t. Either way we are getting our fucking break. Kill the rats and burn the nest.”

“And if Kennedy isn’t there, then what?” I asked.

“He’ll be there,” she answered firmly. “Because we aren’t leaving until we see him.”

I leaned forward in my seat. “They’ll wonder why. They’ll grow suspicious. As soon as you draw your gun, they’ll fire back. This is suicide.”

Cassidy didn’t answer.

“Micheal was right to wait. He knew better than you.”
