“Yes.”

“Oh, just thinking about something.”

“About Bryce?”

“Why do you assume it’s him?”

“Because he’s the person that’s always on your mind.”

“I’m just laughing at how crazy he looked when he learned I’d taken his job.”

“His mother is just as sly as yours.”

“Of course. They wouldn’t be besties if she wasn’t.”

“Her son, on the other hand, is drowning in his love for you.”

“What?” Tati asked, gaze jerking to Taro as she lifted her foot that was starting to ache.

“Feet hurt?” he asked.

“Forget all of that. You said Bryce is drowning in his love for me?”

“You should sit down if your feet hurt.”

“I can’t sit down while the staff is still standing and serving the guests.”

“Isn’t it almost time for this thing to end?”

“Not yet. Now answer my question.”

“Yes, Tati. Even a blind man can see that he’s drowning in his love for you.”

Tati held in her smile.

“You’re drowning too,” Taro said. “But drowning isn’t a good thing. Drowning in emotions makes you dangerous. Melinda is probably drowning in emotions too.”

When he put it like that, it no longer made her want to smile.

“You and Bryce should be swimming, not drowning,” Taro continued.

“Once everything is over, maybe we’ll be able to swim.”

“We’ll see,” Taro said. “I’ll take care of things on my end. I can’t help you with your relationship issues. I’ve never been good at those.”

“You just haven’t found the right woman yet.”

“Who said a woman was the right person for me?”

Tati cocked her head to the side. “My bad. You haven’t found the right person, then.”

Taro chuckled. “That’s better.”

Tati laughed. “When you find that person, I want to meet them.”

Taro nodded, blushing. He never blushed. Had he found someone? A guy, maybe? If he’d found someone he could love, she would be happy for him. Tati reached for her glass of wine and then paused.

“I’ll be back. I need to use the bathroom.”
