“It wouldn’t have. You don’t even know me. Now, be quiet, stop crying, and answer my questions. If you answer them all, I’ll let you live. Okay?”

“Yes… yes, sir.”

“Who paid you to let those two men into the building?”

“No one did, sir.”

“Stop lying,” Bryce growled, twisting the boy’s arm behind his back.

“Ow. Ow. I swear. Teddy and Ross only asked me to turn the camera off at a certain time. And then call their phone so that the record would show that I talked to them as soon as the cameras went down. So, I did.”

“Teddy and Ross? You didn’t let them into the building?”

“No, sir. They work here. They’re security. They have their own cards to enter and exit the building. I just needed to turn the cameras off when they told me to and turn them back on when they told me to. Then, they would pretend there was a glitch with the cameras and that I called them over to check it out. They had me put up wet floor signs in the lobby and keep anyone from entering the building for at least an hour.”

“Why did they have you do all of that?”

“I asked, and Ross said he wanted to catch his ex-girlfriend cheating or something like that.”

That was just a cover-up to get the kid to help. The boy had no idea he was about to be their accomplice in a murder. So, basically, Mr. Farrina had found out where Tati was living and then hired the building’s security to take her out.Shit.

“If I find out you’re lying to me, I’ll return here and kill you.”

“I’m not lying. I swear.”

Bryce stood just as a knock sounded on the glass door of the building’s entrance. His team had arrived.

“Let them in,” Bryce ordered the kid, who scrambled to his feet and rushed to do Bryce’s bidding.

Smitty frowned as he approached Bryce. “Looks like you need a clean-up, also,” Smitty told him.

“Yeah. I do.”

“We’ve got some clean clothes in the car if you want them.”

“Thanks, Smitty. Try to be as quiet as you can. I don’t want to disturb the people living here.”

“Don’t worry. We’ll put up maintenance signs in the hallway in case anyone gets nosey.”

Bryce patted Smitty on the back as the man walked past him. Bryce stared down at his bloody hands. It wasn’t safe for Tati to stay there any longer. But if he told her to move, she’d think he was being petty again.

And if he told her about the attack, she’d be frightened and would probably try to run. If she ran, he’d never get his revenge. He had to find a way to protect her. Bryce looked toward the elevators, mind trying to come up with a solution. But there was only one solution, and there was no point in searching for others.

“Tati, I guess you have no choice but to live with me.”

A smile stretched across his face. He could protect her from Mr. Farrina. But his poor little liar had no one to protect her from him.

Chapter Ten

Tatianna

T

atianna awoke the next morning to the shrill ring of her phone. Opening her eyes, she stared toward her window and saw that it was still dark outside. Only one person would call her at this hour. Her mother's ringtone continued to blare. The thought of ignoring it flitted through her mind.

Following on its heels was the thought that something could truly be wrong. Tati turned over and grabbed the phone from her nightstand. She answered, making her voice sound groggier than she felt.

"Ma, it's still dark outside," Tati groaned.
