We stared at each other when I took a deep breath and sat on the edge of the desk. “When I bought out Oxford, I had ulterior motives. I was planning on firing you when I took ownership but, when I read Stacy’s book, I saw how talented you were. I always knew you were, but I guess I never said it enough.”
“I thought you didn’t read Stacy’s book?”
“You told me to read what I was investing my money in, so I did. Her book is amazing, so I will do whatever it takes for her to receive the publicity that she deserves. And you creating the bookstore tours are a great way to start her journey into the literary world because her story is going places.”
“I agree.”
“But she’s not the only person who has talent. You do as well.”
“Remy…”
“From what I have read so far, you are an amazing author, and your story should also be recognized.”
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying that although our personal relationship is rocky, our professional relationship will always remain straight. You don’t have to quit, Porsha. You’re too talented to leave Oxford.”
“You don’t want to fire me?”
“No, Porsha. Whatever is going on with us, we’ll work it out. But with your writing career, I believe it should start. That’s if you want it.”
“I do.”
“Then, I would need you to finish your story and submit it to the screening committee. I’m sure they will love it because I do.”
“Wow, thank you.”
“No problem. So, are you staying?”
She slowly nodded.
“Good. Now, you can put your things back on the desk and get to work.”
“I will, once we address the elephant in the room.”
“Let’s not go there.”
“We still have to talk about us, Remy. Yes, you said we can be professional, but is that really true? We slept together, and you didn’t feel any connection?”
“You know I do, P. Although everything that has happened, I still want to put you in my arms and kiss you. I still want to be with you, but because you kept all of that from me for so long and left me after my mom made you, my trust in you has diminished. I don’t know if you’ll walk out on me again if shit gets hard again.”
“I know I’ve lost my trust in you, but you also have to understand the position I was in.”
“Yeah, my mom manipulated you, but you still could have talk to me about it. I would have talked to her and told her to leave us alone.”
“She was willing to take her funding from your business if I didn’t walk away.”
I nodded. “You don’t think I know that? My mom is vile and evil, so I knew all of that going into Delgado Industries. She loves me but, when she loves someone, she loves hard, so I have put up a lot of shit from her. But that wouldn’t have stopped me from loving you. I would have found the money to start my business; as long as we were together, it wouldn’t have matter when I had started it. At least I know I would have done it on my own.”
“And you did. Look at how you expanded the business and even bought several, including Oxford. So, you can’t say that you didn’t do it on your own.”
“All I’m saying is that I would have found a way to secure my business. She did everything she could to keep you away from me, and she succeed by waving your dad’s sickness and my business in your face. I’m still upset that you didn’t tell me about your dad because I would have done something to help him.”
“Because I didn’t want to worry you with my problems.”
“How many times I’m going to say when we’re in a relationship, your problems is mine and vice versa? That’s how a relationship works. If you can’t handle each other’s issues and concerns, then you shouldn’t be with that person. Plain and simple.”
“I understand that now.”
