“That’s why I’m so protected of Remy because I didn’t spend as much time with him growing up as I should had. With me trying to build a foundation for him, I neglected a lot of his time, which I do regret.”

“But look at y’all now. Your relationship is stronger than ever.”

“Yes, it is. I would do anything for Remy, even protect him from the people in his life. From potential business partners, to even his relationships, I want the best for him, so I will do whatever it takes.”

I sighed. Let the berating begin.

“I know you have a promising relationship. Remy thinks very highly of you.”

“Well, he’s important to me.”

“Is he? I mean, I see what Remy is doing for you, but what are you doing for him? What are your future plans? What intentions do you have for Remy?”

“I love Remy, and I would do anything for him. He has been an inspiration for me, with him launching his own company, which is leading me to follow my own path in publishing. I even hope to release my own story in the future.”

“How nice, but what can you do for him now? Clearly, you know he’s going to go places with his tech company. He’s going to be rolling in dough, but you’re just living off of a pipe dream because publishing will only get you so far. It’s not going to give you the type of wealth that Remy’s company is going to do.”

“Do you really believe that? Because any company can falter.”

“So, you’re saying Remy’s company is not going to succeed?”

“I didn’t say that. I know his company will go places; I’m just saying that any company can fail if it doesn’t have the right people behind it.”

Renee smirked and got up. I looked around the room, wondering when Remy was coming back. This was too much, and I was ready to go. She walked back with a file and sat it down in front of me.

“What is this?” I asked while picking it up.

“Since I deal with a lot of people at my clubs, I do know a variety of individuals, including police officers and investigators.”

“Wait, did you run a background check on me?”

“Yes, I did. You’re a part of my son’s life, so I have to know who he associates with.”

I glanced at her with a scorn. “I don’t have anything to hide.”

“No, you don’t, which I guess is a good thing. But I do know about your family.”

I shook my head. “Whoa, you ran a background on them too? Why would you do that? Whatever issue you have with me is fine but, please, my parents are not your concern.”

“Like I said, you’re a part of Remy’s life, so even your family I have to be concerned about.”

“They have nothing to hide either.”

“I admit, they are respectable people. Your mother is a teacher while your father works in public health. Turns out, he’s been sick and will need a major surgery.”

I stared at her, wondering how the hell she knew about that. “How did you know?”

“Remember, I know various individuals. I have associates all over, so you never know who you may come in contact with because they may know me.”

“But that’s confidential information that you shouldn’t have obtained.”

“Well, I did.”

I looked around the room, wondering who the hell could have told her this. Yes, my dad was sick. Since he had been working in public health as an inspector for over 20 years, he contracted a disease that had affected his immune system and had been receiving treatment for the past three months. At first, the treatments were helping him, and he was starting to get better; but within the past two weeks, he had been feeling tired and hadn’t been able to get out of bed.

Despite my dad not going to the hospital, my mom felt it was necessary, which I was glad she did. Turned out, his liver was deteriorating and he needed a transplant. It was devastating for my mom and I to hear, mainly because we’re used to seeing him healthy. That, and we didn’t know how he would receive one considering they would have to have the same blood type. My mom and I both wanted to test to see if we were a match, but my dad didn’t want us to. He felt if it was his time to go, then so be it; but we knew he still had a lot of life in him, that’s why we’re going to do what we could to keep him alive, including going to get tested.

Of course, Remy didn’t know what was going on. With him trying to get Delgado Industries off the ground, I didn’t want to bombard him with my problems. I wanted him to focus on his business. That’s why every time he wanted to visit my parents, I would give him excuses, telling him they’re busy with work or other stuff, knowing they were at the hospital. I’d even been away for some time, but I would tell him I was busy looking for a job, which only made me feel bad for not telling him the truth.
