I looked confused as I walked inside. Chandra was on the couch, giving a fallen expression as I approached her. “Hey, sis, what’s wrong?” I asked while sitting down.
“A lot happened at the party earlier,” Chandra answered.
I sighed as I glanced from Jasper to her. “It’s about Porsha and my mom, isn’t it?” She looked surprised as I took a deep breath. “I know what happened, so you don’t have to hide it.”
“Wait, you knew about the ultimatum?”
I nodded. “Yes,”
“For how long?”
“Does it matter? I knew, and Porsha, the person I thought loved me, never said anything about it.”
“I just found out tonight, but Rem, if you knew all of this time, was buying Oxford a front to destroy Porsha?”
I sighed and got up from the couch. I ran my hand through my hair, unsure if I wanted to answer it.
“I take that as a yes,” Jasper said.
“What if it was at first? I was going to buy the company and immediately fire Porsha. I figured she destroyed my life and my dream, so I’d do the same for her. But I couldn’t do it. When I saw her at Oxford, I didn’t see the woman who broke my heart; instead, I saw the woman that I first laid eyes on in our parents’ kitchen. I saw our love for each other and the future we could have spent together. So, I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t crush her dream job.”
“Instead, you made it a living hell with her working for you.”
“I figured I could give her a bit of her own medicine, but I was easy on her compared to how she treated me.”
“You have to look at it from Porsha’s perspective,” Jasper said. I glanced at Jasper as he continued. “She was put in a rough position because of your mom. Her dad was sick, and your mom was waving her money around as a bargaining chip. So, what did you want her to do?”
“I wanted her to talk to me. The two of us could have figured things out together. But she took the wrong route and now, she’s regretting it because there’s no way we’re getting back together.”
“I’m sure she didn’t choose the wrong decision since it kept her father alive.”
I sighed. Jasper was right about that. I was sure Porsha didn’t like the decision she chose since it hurt me, but I was sure she would had done it again to save her father. I knew I probably would have if I was put in that position.
“I was pissed when Porsha told me what happened, but I do agree with Jasper. We don’t always make the right decisions sometimes, but we’ll do whatever it takes to protect the people that we love. In Porsha’s case, she loved you, she still does, but she loves her dad just as much and would not want him to suffer in any way,” Chandra said.
“Your mom always used money to get what she wanted. She clearly doesn’t like us and she damn sure never liked Porsha. She was doing everything in her power to get rid of her. She succeeded when she knew her father was sick,” Jasper chimed in.
“That doesn’t excuse Porsha from destroying our relationship. If she really loved me, she would have talked to me.”
“Maybe she wanted to but, since it was your mother, she figured which side were you going to choose,” Chandra said.
Jasper came over and sat beside me. “When it comes to your business, you have always been smart and level-headed. You’re able to make decisions without any hesitation and know it would benefit your company, but when it comes to your mom, you don’t see what she does. It’s as if you’ll overlook it or look the other way.”
“So, what you’re saying? That I should cut my mom out of my life?”
“That’s not what Jasper is trying to say,” Chandra interjected. “He’s pointing out that you don’t hold your mom accountable on certain things; for instance, all the time Dad has asked for Jasper and I to come visit you in Miami, did it ever happen?”
I sighed. “No.”
“Because she didn’t want us around. Instead, you had to come here with her in tow. Mainly because she didn’t want you anywhere near us or our mom.”
“Listen, I know my mom may have her ways, but she never tried to keep me away from y’all. She always encouraged me to establish a relationship with everyone.”
“Ha!” Jasper exclaimed.
“It’s not like that, Jasper.”
“Why do you think the two of us didn’t have the best relationship?”
