Once I finished, I went into the dining room and sat down to see the feast my mom prepared. I didn’t know why there was so much food when it was just the three of us. “Wow, Mom, you went all out.”
“I was in a cooking mood, so I decided to make a few things.”
“I’m glad you did because I’m starving.”
“Let’s get to it, then.”
We began putting food onto our plates when my mom handed me the salad bowl. She gave me a suspicious glance before speaking, “I feel like something is up.”
“Why do you say that?”
“Because you don’t come to visit us during the week unless something is wrong. So, spill it? Does it have anything to do with your job?”
“Yes, it does, but I’m not going to bore you both with the details. I want to enjoy my night with my two favorite people.”
“She’s definitely hiding something,” my dad said.
I sighed. Nothing could get past those two. “Listen, I really don’t want to get into it about my job.”
“You don’t have to, but it would be nice to talk about it, wouldn’t it?” my mom said.
I put down my fork and stared at my parents. Maybe talking about it would help me ease my tension. “It’s been difficult working with Remy. He’s been rude, insensitive, and difficult. I understand that he’s still hurting, but I don’t know how much I can take with working there.” I explained to my parents everything that had been going on. While my mom seemed understanding, my dad was the opposite.
“Yes, he’s still upset over what happened, but that doesn’t give him the right to treat you like that.”
“I agree, but everyone has different ways of expressing their emotions. He figures he can provide different business tactics to see if I’ll crack into leaving.”
“Don’t quit, baby. That’ll just prove to him that he’s right and that you’re not serious about the job.”
“I think you’re wrong, sweetie,” my mom injected. “I think quitting would help you two reconnect.”
“I hardly doubt that. He hates my guts.”
“He doesn’t hate you, baby. He’s still hurt over what you did to him. He’s going to go through different stages but, deep down, he still has feelings for you.”
“Maybe, but I don’t think I can continue working there. It’s just too much for me.”
“Have you two really talked about what happened and why you walked away from him?”
I took a sip of water and nodded. “We sort of did.”
“Either you did or you didn’t?”
I sighed. “I told him that I needed to know more about myself before being with him and that I wanted to focus on my career.”
“Is that the reason you really gave Remy because we all know that wasn’t the truth?”
I glanced at my mom, as she put her hand on mine. “Sweetie, you have got to stop running from what happened and actually face the truth. That’s the only way you and Remy are going to heal.”
“I can’t tell him the truth, Mom. It’ll devastate him.”
“It will, but at least he’ll have an idea to why you really walked out on him.”
“I can’t do that. The reason I gave is the reason he’ll have to accept.”
“Does Chandra even know?”
I sighed, wishing my parents didn’t even know why I really left. Part of it was because I wanted to find myself, but it wasn’t the entire reason. It was something that I didn’t know if Remy would had been able to accept, so I felt leaving was the best choice.
