fter visiting the other departments and checking out the budgets with Cierra, it was time for me to call it a day. I knew I had my hands full with purchasing Oxford, but it was going to take me some time to figure out everything that went behind a purchasing company. I’d done my research on it, but I should have done a lot more before today.

I decided to head to my parents before going home. I always tried to see or speak to them at least once a week. With my busy schedule, I always wanted to make time for them, so I’d do whatever I could to make that happen.

I went up to the walkway when I saw my dad in the garage. I was going to surprise him, but he already said my name before approaching him.

“I knew you were walking up, Rem.”

“Nothing gets past you.”

“Damn right. Your sister and brother are here.”

I sighed. I really didn’t want to see Chandra, and I didn’t want to see Jasper. My brother and I didn’t really have the best relationship, but we remained cordial with our parents. I figured he was a screwup, and he thought I was an asshole. He was just mad because I made something of myself.

“I’m not staying long. I just wanted to come by and show my face before I head home.”

“Don’t be like that, Rem. When do we ever have everyone together at one time?”

“I’m not in the mood for Jasper’s antics. And I saw Chandra earlier…”

“At Oxford?”

I exhaled the breath I was holding.

“You didn’t think she was going to tell your mom and me about your new company? You didn’t even tell us about it.”

“Because it was meant to be a secret.”

“For who? Us or Porsha?”

I looked up to the heavens, realizing Chandra had a big mouth.

“Come on, let’s go inside, so your mom can bitch at you. You may be a big tech owner, but you’re still her little boy.”

“I know, Dad.”

He gave me a slap on the back as we walked inside. We saw everyone in the kitchen and my mom greeted me with a hug and a kiss. Jasper nodded as I did the same as Chandra smiled. I should give her an earful for telling everyone about Oxford, but it was fine. They were going to find out anyway.

“When were you going to tell anyone that you bought another company, and Porsha works there?” my mom started.

I glanced at Chandra, who shrugged. Chandra and I always had a great brother-sister relationship. My parents never married; they conceived me on a drunken night with friends. I thought they were going to actually become a couple, but it wasn’t meant for them to be. Instead, they were better off as friends.

While my dad moved to Texas for an engineer position, my mom and I moved to Miami, so she could open up a club. It was hard not being around my dad, but he visited on weekends and holidays, which made family time extra special. But between their parenting styles, my dad was the laidback one and my mom was the overprotective one. My parents both pushed me to be my best, but my mom pushed me a little harder. She knew that starting a business was going to be hard for me, that’s why she did everything she could to make my dream a reality. She gave me business advice and money to start up Delgado Industries. She didn’t want anything stopping me to reach my goal, which I was extremely grateful for.

When I did find out that my dad was marrying Chandra’s mom, I was a little devastated, mainly because I wanted to have that perfect family; but when I met Diana and saw how she treated me as her own son, I realized that I did have the family that I always wanted. I even called her mom.

My biological mom got married and was happily living in Miami. I was happy for both of my parents as they had found their person. Being around them did make me think differently about things, including being in love. They showed me that you could fall in love with the right person, and I thought I found that with Porsha. I guess sometimes that’s not always the case.

“It was supposed to be a surprise, but I guess someone beat me to it.”

“Don’t blame your sister for this. You should have told your family about this.”

“Yeah, you should have,” Jasper spoke.

I shot him daggers as I grabbed a water bottle from the fridge. While Chandra and I were always cool, that wasn’t the case with me and Jasper. He always felt I shouldn’t be a part of the family, mainly because Diana always looked at me as her go-getter. It didn’t mean she loved Jasper less because she did want what’s best for him; he just continuously liked to screw up.

“I was going to, but it was something I was going to do in person. Things just got out of hand, that’s all.”

“But why buy a business that your ex works for? You know nothing good will come from this,” Diana continued.
