“Hello, sweetie! Just wanted to check on you with your first day at Oxford.”

“Hi, Mom! The day hasn’t started yet.”

“I know, but I still wanted to check on you. Your dad says hi as well.”

“He must be still asleep.”

“Of course. That man’s been retired for only two weeks, and that’s all he does. He figured he can now since he has the time.”

I smiled. My parents have been my inspiration for all my life. They had helped me through so much, especially during my lowest moments, which I truly appreciated.

“Well, I will let you go, but before I do, something crossed my mind earlier about you and Remy.”

“Really, Mom? Why would you bring him up?”

“Because I still hate how you left him. That, and I was reading an article about him in the newspaper's business section. I can’t believe he’s a millionaire now over some video games and tech security. I knew he was going places, but I never imagined the magnitude of his success.”

“Mom, I really have to go. I’ll talk to you later.”

Before she could say anything else, I disconnected the call. I didn’t want to hear about how successful Remy was now. Don’t get me wrong, I was proud of what Remy had accomplished, but that was part of the reason for our downfall.

I sighed, wishing she didn’t have to bring him up. Now, I’d be thinking about him all day and what could have been if we were still together. But if we were, I knew I couldn’t accomplish my dreams because I’d be living through his.

I stared out the window again when the office phone rang. I wondered who was calling me as I picked up the phone. “Porsha Baxter, speaking.”

“Hi, Porsha, it’s Cierra. We’re about to have an emergency meeting in the conference hall in 10 minutes. Turns out the new owner made a surprise visit and wants to speak with the staff.”

“Really,” I said. That was sort of quick if the acquisition was done this morning. Maybe it was already done, and everyone just now found out about it. I sighed and grabbed my phone. I guess I’d get to meet the new owner on my first day.

I noticed the other employees walking in the same direction, so I followed them as it led to the conference hall. I took a seat near the back, as everyone was busily in conversation about who the new owner could be. Thoughts about Remy kept swirling in my head as I wondered if he could be the person who’d bought Oxford. He did have a successful tech company.

Couldn’t be...

I shifted in my seat, trying to get comfortable, when I heard feedback from the microphone which silenced everyone. I noticed Cierra was at the podium as she got everyone’s attention.

“Thank you, everyone, for coming to this emergency meeting. The new owner wanted to meet everyone, so his wish is his command, right?”

There was a light chuckle in the audience, as Cierra cleared her throat. “Okay, everyone, why don’t I give him the floor? Here’s the new owner of Oxford Publishing, Mr. Remy Delgado.”

I nearly fell out of my seat as I saw Remy approach the stage. My heart was pounding fiercely at the sight of him. God, he still looked good. From his physique to his hair, he was every bit of how I remembered him, which made other parts of me come alive.

“Good morning, everyone, and thank you for coming to this meeting. I know this was unexpected, but I wanted to meet the people who will be running my new business.”

My eyebrow raised at his sharp tone. Based on that alone, he seemed ruthless, which was not the Remy I used to know. There are lot of things that may have changed about him. But it had been 10 years since I’d last seen him.

“As some of you may know, I am the owner of one of the most successful tech companies in recent years, Delgado Industries, so I don’t expect anything less from you with Oxford Publishing. My name is attached to this company, so I want every employee to exhibit the qualities that I hold with my tech companies. If you don’t, I will see you won’t make it to the company picnic next year.”

I noticed several employees looking at each other before looking back at Remy. I shook my head, realizing he had definitely changed. Or maybe this was the businessman talking. He had to protect his investment.

“I know most of you have been with this company for years, so much so that some are facing retirement. I hope you all can prove to me that you of being here because any slip-ups, and you all will be looking for other employment. I can’t afford for issues to occur, so I’m counting on you all to make me and this company look good. Thank you.”

“Can we ask any questions since we didn’t expect this change to happen?” one employee asked out loud.

“And I read you don’t know anything about this business, so how are you going to come at us threatening our jobs!” another employee exclaimed.

“I’m not answering any questions at this time. You can ask Cierra for my email and send your concerns there, and I’ll make sure to answer them. But I would like to see Porsha Baxter in my office, please.”

Everyone gave confusing glances as I looked up to see Remy staring at me. He had a devilish smirk plastered on his lips, which made me a bit nervous but highly turned on. I didn’t know how in the hell he found me, but he did, which made me not want to move.
